Issue Description:
There has been a problem reported on Sun Ultra Enterprise 5S and Ultra
Enterprise 10S systems. The problem occurs when attempting to boot from
a SCSI device that is supported by either of the following PCI Ultra SCSI
cards:
F375-0005-01 DUAL,SGL,ULTASCSI,876,PCI
F375-0006-01 DUAL DIFFNTL,ULTASCSI,PCI
The new version of Sun Ultra SCSI PCI cards, shown above, may not be
recognized in Ultra Enterprise 5, 10, 30 and 60 workstations and workgroup
servers.
The root cause of the problem is that Sun's supplier changed the Subsystem
Vendor ID and Subsystem Device ID numbers on the cards. Therefore, Sun's
OBP system firmware does not recognize the card(s).
Previous versions of cards worked properly prior to the new Ultra SCSI PCI
card being sold. It is not clear whether the new versions of the Sun
branded Ultra SCSI PCI cards can be easily identified in the field.
The new Ultra SCSI PCI cards were shipped during Q4 calendar year 1997 and
Q1 calendar year 1998.
Corrective Action:
Customers and Field Service Representatives that encounter problems booting
SCSI from devices interfaced to Ultra SCSI PCI cards (X6540A or X6541A) may
implement any one of the recommended procedures listed below to resolve the
above stated problem.
1. This temporary work around is entered on the Ultra 5/10 system work-
station or workgroup server console:
a. At the ok prompt do the following:
ok nvedit \ puts the user in nvramrc editor
0: dev /builtin-drivers
1: alias pci1000,1000 pci1000,3
2: device-end
3: probe-all install-console banner
ok nvstore
ok setenv use-nvramrc? true
ok reset-all
2. OR Install Patch ID# 106121-03 or greater, which contains OBP firmware
rev. 3.11 v9 now availible on SunSolve, to resolve the above stated issue.
Making sure to follow the "Special Install Instructions" of the patch
README file.
Comments:
An emergency ECO is in process to release new OPB code, 3.11 v9 and to
release a Ultra 5/10 mother board change to the video circuit which is
not related to the Ultra SCSI PCI card issue.
SMCC Operations will phase in the revised systems at the beginning of Q4FY98.
