Issue Description:
This FIN is intended to inform about incompatibility problems with
using new NVRAM on the current Ultra 5/10 motherboard. Distributing
this information will help support engineers to plan ahead and avoid
the incompatibility problem.
PROBLEM 1
The new NVRAM part number 525-1817-0X cannot be used on the
current Ultra 5/10 motherboard part number 375-0079-04. Due to this
incompatibility, a new part number 375-0115-0X has been created for the
new Ultra 5/10 motherboard containing the new NVRAM prom assembly.
PROBLEM 2
Mislabeling issue; Approximately 1,200 (375-0115-0X) motherboards were
manufactured with new NVRAM part number 525-1817-0X . These
motherboards were incorrectly labeled as 375-0079-0X. The mislabeled
boards are NOT electrically or functionally defective.
Above problem has been risen because the Sun manufacturing vendor,
Mitac had to switch from AMP socket to Chupond socket for housing the
NVRAM as a result of material supply problem. Consequently a small
number of systems shipped without appropriate Corrective Action
procedures instituted as mentioned above.
The Corrective Action was taken at Sun manufacturing vide the
ECO WO_17476, which released a Ultra 5/10 new motherboard part
number 375-0115-0X having the new NVRAM part number 525-1817-0X.
Due to the physical characteristics of the new NVRAM , the new NVRAM is
NOT compatible with the old motherboard. Systems manufactured with the
new OEM motherboard and NVRAM will be identified as such with the
letter "B" following the serial number on the EZ label which is located
on the side of front Bezel.
Refer to the following compatibility matrix shown below;
Mother Board | NVRAM | socket type | Old NVRAM | New NVRAM
------------------------------------------------------------------
375-0079-XX | (old) | Amp | Good | Not Good
375-0079-XX | (new) | Chupond | Good | Good
375-0115-XX | (new) | Chupond | Good | Good
Implementation:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Pro-Active)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PRO-ACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---

| X | REACTIVE (As Required)

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Enterprise Services Field Representatives and Warranty Customers that
may be encountering the above mentioned problem;
In the event of a service issue requiring Ultra 5/10 motherboard or
NVRAM replacement, Ultra U5/U10 motherboards and NVRAMs should be
replaced as shown on part replacement matrix below.
Part Replacement Matrix:
Installed | Socket Type | Installed NVRAM | Replacement | Remarks
