Issue Description:
Fiber channel devices may experience symptoms consistent with marginal
signal quality on the GBaud FC-AL loops. Marginal signal quality can
be caused by dust particles and/or errant electrostatic discharge (ESD)
for GBIC's, backplanes, interface boards, GEM boards, interconnect
assemblies, FC-AL drives, and fiber cables.
Symptoms of errors that might be seen include:
- excessive "CRC Error" or "scsi parity error" messages
- excessive "OFFLINE" messages
- excessive "timeout" messages
- "Offline Timeout" messages
These errors may be caused by a single dust particle interrupting
and/or interfering with an optical signal. Likewise a component may be
damaged by unintended transmission of an ESD charge from the
maintenance person to the component. To minimize the possibility of
failures from either an errant dust particle or ESD charge, ensure that
the handling guidelines provided in this FIN are followed.

Corrective Action:
An Authorized Enterprise Field Service Representative may avoid the
above mentioned problems by following the recommendations as shown
below.
To minimize the possibility of failures from either an errant dust
particle or errant ESD transmission, ensure the handling guidelines
provided in this FIN are followed for installing the new parts in
the field.
NOTE: Ensure that the person handling the device is following correct
ESD procedures to guard against the possibility of damaging the
device. Using a working ESD wriststrap, avoiding contact between
the device and any clothing even when wearing the wriststrap etc.
NOTE: Also make sure to use the static mat P/N 250-1080-01 and attach
wrist straps for safety reason to follow an ISO9000 certified
way of handling of ESD product.
1. Remove the fiber optical cable from either the GBIC, Host Bus
Adapter, GEM-PCI or GEM-SBUS.
When handling or installing fiber optic cables, do not exceed the
minimum bend radius or exceed their maximum tensile load values.
This means that they should not be kinked sharply or have a bend
radius smaller than 30mm for standard Sun fiber cables.
Furthermore, there should be no significant tension (i.e. 'pull')
on the fiber cable - any tension has the effect of increasing the
minimum allowable bend radius before damage occurs.
2. Immediately place protective caps on fiber optic cable ends.
3. With the protective cover installed, position the new GBIC,
Host Bus Adapter, GEM-PCI or GEM-SBUS for installation.
4. Remove the failed GBIC or Host Bus Adapter.
When storing a GBIC or when the GBIC is disconnected from a fiber
optic cable, be sure to keep the dust plug over the GBIC's
optical bores. The Fiber Optical devices, including Host Bus
Adapters, GBICs, GEM-PCI or GEM-SBUS are Electro Static Discharge
(ESD) sensitive devices.
5. Remove protective cover from new part, blow connector with
compressed gas, and install new part for either GBIC or Host Bus
Adapter. Use protective cover from new part and place on failed
part prior to returning part to vendor for repair for GEM-PCI or
GEM-SBUS.
6. Remove protective caps from fiber optic cable, blow the fiber
optic cable connectors with compressed gas and connect cable
to the new GBIC or Host Bus Adapter.
7. Place protective caps in clean bag and save for future
maintenance activity.
Note: In this document, the term "Compressed Gas" will be used to refer
to Specification: 1,1,1,2 - Tetrafluoroethane and Demethyl Ether
compressed gas used for cleaning electronic devices . (This product
may be found at most electronic parts suppliers in spray can form.)

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Enterprise Services will attempt to
contact all affected customers to recommend implementation of
the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Enterprise Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
