DOC: 816-7290-11: Sun StorEdge 3310 SCSI Array Installation;
Operation; and Service Manual.
Issue Description:
Battery FRUs, Controller FRUs and Controllers installed in Sun StorEdge
3310 SCSI Arrays may be missing a battery label showing the manufacture
date of the battery. This prevents customers and support personnel
from determining battery age and thus performing required maintenance
for the battery.
This issue affects any Sun StorEdge 3310 SCSI Array manufactured before
October 2002. It also affects some Battery FRUs and Controller FRUs
residing in spare parts inventories. Affected batteries do not have a
label showing the FRU P/N and date of manufacture.
The battery is a consumable device, subject to maintenance according to
user documentation. Failure to label the battery with the date of
manufacture does not provide a visual indicator of when the battery
should be maintained.
These batteries should be changed every 2 years if the unit is
continuously operated at 25 C and yearly at 35 C or higher. The FRU
shelf life for a battery is 3 years. See Section 6.2 of Sun StorEdge
3310 SCSI Array Installation, Operation, and Service Manual
(816-7290-10).
This issue occurs because the requirement to label the battery with
date of manufacture was not defined until mid-September 2002.
The battery supplier's product specification was updated and
re-released on September 30, 2002. It specifies the Sun labels for the
Battery Module, including date of manufacture as part of the serial
number. No purge of parts inventory is planned.
For StorEdge 3310 Array batteries without a label, the manufacture date
should be assumed to be August, 2002. See further details below.

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned problem.
To determine battery age for a Sun StorEdge 3310 Array Controller,
examine the part number label on the battery. The date of manufacture
is included with the serial number. The first 4 digits after the "-"
in the serial number will be the date code. For example, 0301 would
mean Week 1 of 2003.
If the battery has no part number label, assume the date of manufacture
to be August 2002.
Comments:
None.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Sun Services will attempt to contact
all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Sun Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Sun Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
