Manual: 817-0510-11: Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 Systems Service Manual.
Issue Description:
The Media Bay System Configuration cable on Sun Fire V1280 and Netra
1280 systems cannot be removed from the Media Bay backplane. Attempts
to remove this cable can result in System Configuration cable damage
which can lead to either loss of data or total loss of connectivity to
the Media Bay. In addition, the System Configuration card reader cable
that connects to the System Configuration Card Reader cannot be removed
for these same reasons.
The System Configuration cable and System Configuration card reader
cables are permanently attached by solder. Therefore, these cables
should not be removed from the Media Bay or from the System
Configuration Card Reader.
Physical damage to the System Configuration cable may be observed by
the field engineer as crimping or dimpling of the cable. Damage caused
by pulling the System Configuration cable from the Media Bay PCB or
removal of the System Configuration card reader cable, which connects
to the System Configuration Card Reader, may lead to component failure
that has no visible signs of damage.
When this issue occurs, errors like the following could appear:
Symptom 1 - Removal the System Configuration cable from Sun Fire
V1280 / Netra 1280 media bay
WARNING: /ssm@0,0/pci@18,600000/scsi@2 (glm0):

Symptom 2 - Symptoms mentioned below are System Configuration reset
condition. System Configuration resets may be one observed
symptoms that may result in the following error.

The Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 Systems Service Manual (p/n 817-0510-11
Section 5.2.1, initial page 65) may provide unclear instruction on
cable removal. In Figure 5-10, the drawing of the Media Bay does not
include the System Configuration data cable, which may give the
impression that the cable is not a permanent part of the assembly.
Documentation describing the above can also be found at:
http://sunsolve.central.sun.com/data/817/817-0510/pdf/
Through an ECO, Engineering will release a warning label that alerts
the field/customer to damage caused by attempts to remove the System
Configuration cable from the media bay.
Implementation:
---
| | MANDATORY (Fully Proactive)
---
---
| | CONTROLLED PROACTIVE (per Sun Geo Plan)
---

| X | REACTIVE (As Required)

Corrective Action:
The following recommendation is provided as a guideline for authorized
Sun Services Field Representatives who may encounter the above
mentioned issue.
Do not attempt to remove the System Configuration data cable attached
to the Media Bay from the backplane end. The System Configuration data
cable may only be removed from the IB_SSC assembly by unlatching the
connector.
If engineers need to replace the System Configuration cable in the Sun
Fire V1280/Netra 1280 system, the entire Media Bay Assembly should be
replaced instead of attempting to remove a permanently soldered cable.
In order to remove the Media Bay Assembly, the following cables must be
removed from the IB_SSC assembly: disk drive power cable, System
Configuration data cable, SCC card reader cable, and the DVD-ROM
drive/data power cable.
Comments:
None.

Implementation Footnote:
i) In case of MANDATORY FINs, Sun Services will attempt to contact
all affected customers to recommend implementation of the FIN.
ii) For CONTROLLED PROACTIVE FINs, Sun Services mission critical
support teams will recommend implementation of the FIN (to their
respective accounts), at the convenience of the customer.
iii) For REACTIVE FINs, Sun Services will implement the FIN as the
need arises.
