IEC Numbering System

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) changed its numbering system in 1997 by adding 60,000 to their existing numbers. For example, the designation IEC 320 is the same as IEC 60320. The change was made to harmonize the IEC system with the European Normalisation (EN) system.

IEC60309 Connector Notes

  1. The 16A and 20A connectors have a diameter of approximately 45 mm.
  2. The 30A and 32A connectors have a diameter of approximately 60 mm.
  3. The 60A connector has a diameter of approximately 88 mm.
  4. Splashproof connectors do not include a locking collar.
  5. Watertight connectors include a locking collar.

IP Numbering System

The International or Ingress Protection Rating consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter defined in International standard IEC 60529. The first digit indicates the level of protection against solids. The second digit indicates the level of protection against liquids. Letters A, B, C, and D can be appended to classify only the level of protection against access to hazardous parts by persons. The IP44 connector protects against solids greater than 1mm and splashing liquids. The IP67 connector protects against dust and immersion in water to a depth of 1 meter. IEC 60529 provided more details than marketing terms such as Splashproof (IP44) and Watertight (IP67).
