Product
Sun Netra T2000 Server

Part
  • Part No: 300-2006-01/02
  • Part Description: 550W Power Supply (Type D193) -48V DC

Impact

Hot insertion of the affected DC PSU into PS1 could cause the server to reboot.  Investigation shows that the issue is likely to affect less than 5% of approximately 500 affected units shipped.

Contributing Factors

A subset of Netra T2000 DC systems have PSU connector misalignment due to normal process variation which leads to a transient voltage that causes system reboot on PSU insertion.

This issue only impact the Netra T2000.

Symptoms

Netra T2000 server will sometimes reboot if the affected DC Power Supply (Sun part number 300-2006-01 and -02) is hot inserted into PS1.

Root Cause

The root cause of the Solaris lock up is a negative going voltage transient that is generated on the POWEROK signal from the power supply being inserted into the Netra T2000.  The transient voltage on the POWEROK signal affects the outputs of a gate array and produces a false reset signal to the operating system.  The voltage transient is produced when the ground connections for the power supply signal noise filters make connection to the Power Distribution Board after the signals have made connection. The grounding pins for the signal noise filters are at one end of the power supply to PDB connector.  A slight misalignment of the power supply connector, within normal manufacturing tolerances, can result in the noise filter pins connecting last and thus causing the negative voltage transient.

This issue was addressed with the addition of a 10 ohm resistor between the main power ground & filter ground on 300-2006-03.

Corrective action was made available in Sun Manufacturing via ECO# WO_37471 by the dash roll of 300-2006 to -03 as of August 17, 2007. Corrective action was made available in Services via GSAP 4021 as of August 31, 2007.

Resolution

Hot Swappable: Yes

Upon failure only replace the DC PSU, 300-2006-01 or -02 with 300-2006-03 (or later) per the the existing Netra T2000 Server Service Manual.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

Sun Part Number 300-2006-01 or -02 after a Hot insertion reboot event.

Comments
This issue was fully evaluated as an FCO and found not to meet criteria due to the low failure rate of less than 5%, and low affected installed base of approximately 500 power supplies.
