  • Xoption Description: Dual Gigabit Ethernet MMF (594-1756-02)

Impact

Northstar dash 02 Dual Gigabit Ethernet MMF and UTP cards do not support network boot of Solaris on SPARC systems.

Contributing Factors

Northstar dash 02 Dual GBE cards do not support network boot of Solaris on SPARC based systems that use this card. The affected platforms are listed below:

Sun Fire V215, V245, V445
Sun Fire T1000, T2000, Netra T2000
  Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000, M5000, M8000, M9000

Non-SPARC based systems are not impacted by this issue.  Investigation shows current field exposure to be limited to less than 600 cards total for both SPARC and non-SPARC based systems.

Symptoms

Northstar dash 02 Dual GBE card will not be a bootable device. In cases where there are no other Ethernet interfaces supporting net boot on a SPARC platform, there may be a message saying "incorrect/invalid MAC address".

Root Cause

Due to a manufacturing process error, Northstar dash 02 Dual GBE cards were built without the SPARC binary image that contains the fcode. Each card that supports network boot has SPARC binaries (called fcode) in a flash on the card to provide the correct MAC address and instructions to initialize the card to the platform in order to download a copy of SPARC Solaris. This fcode is needed before the OS runs and loads a driver for the card.

Affected dash 02 inventory in manufacturing and CDPs was purged via StopShip/Purge P001-20407, and Services inventory purged via GSAP 3905. However, a small number of potentially affected Northstar dash 02 Dual GBE cards escaped to the field before the issue was detected.

Northstar dash 02 Dual GBE cards were rolled to dash 03 via ECO WO_35692 to fix the issue by including the SPARC (fcode) binaries in the flash memory on the card.  Latest Northstar dash 03 Dual GBE cards do not have this issue.

Resolution

In SPARC-based platforms, if support for network boot of Solaris is required, replace as follows:

  • 371-0905-02 with 371-0905-03 (or above)
  • 371-0904-02 with 371-0904-03 (or above)

Internal Comments

This issue has been evaluated by Operations and Services and determined not to meet FCO criteria as it only impacts SPARC systems requiring network boot support.  Non-SPARC based systems are not affected by this issue.
