Impact

Battery assembly maintenance or replacement may cause one half, or ALL of CACHE or SM to become blocked.

The issue can occur under the following conditions:

  1. BASIC battery assembly (BATTERY-10, -11, -20, -21) is being replaced for any reason, scheduled or unscheduled.
  2. Microcode is below DKCMAIN 01-19-44-00/00.
  3. Old battery replacement procedure is used per ECN.

Noise generated by incoming current during battery connection may cause the backup switching circuit on the CACHE PCB to fail, which may cause both sides of CACHE or SM to become blocked.  If both sides of CACHE or SM are blocked, the array will experience a complete system outage and possibly DATA LOSS.

Symptoms

Resolution

Ensure microcode level DKCMAIN 01-19-44-00/00 or above is on the subsystem prior to performing battery replacement.  Do not perform scheduled battery maintenance at this time on the BASIC battery assemblies unless following the new replacement instructions. The new instructions require the removal of the corresponding BAT-CTR during battery replacement.

The new BASIC battery assembly replacement instructions are as per the details provided in HDS Alert: 9960#136G / 9910#110G.  The alert is available for review via:

These new instructions are MANDATORY.

Microcode has been modified to display the new battery replacement procedures on the SVP as a step by step procedure beginning with DKCMAIN 01-19-44-00/00.
