Impact It has been found that the 3V lithium coin cell battery used to store date and CMOS settings on the Blade may be prematurely failing in blades that are not installed in chassis for an extended period of time. The typical shelf-life of the battery when power is not applied to the blade is 1 year, however there has been found an issue that could cause it to fail in less than 3 months of sitting not powered. Upon installation, resets after blade removal and re-insertion into the chassis, or chassis power off/on, the BIOS will stop awaiting user input with BIOS settings and date/time for BIOS and SP reset to default, rather than auto-booting with user defined settings and current date/time. System will boot after user input and store settings if the blade is left in a powered-on chassis. This will only occur on blades that are not installed and in use as the battery maintains the real-time clock and CMOS settings while the blade is not powered. When the blade is installed in a chassis and operating with normal power the settings are maintained by the blade power, and not the battery. Symptoms During power-on the BIOS will stop after POST and prior to booting the OS, with CMOS Settings Invalid. Press F1 to load optimal defaults and continue. Press F2 to enter Setup. In addition, the real-time clock will be reset to the default value of 01 January 2000 for host BIOS and 01 January 1972 for blade service processor. If the Lithium Battery is failed, this will occur on every power-on after a blade installation, removal/reinstall into the chassis, blade or chassis power-cycle. Root Cause Due to the lithium battery type being used, there is potential that normal handling can start the battery chemical process to drain the battery, thereby reducing the typical usage life from 1 year to less than 3 months. The battery circuit and type has been redesigned in the next generation blade to provide longer shelf life and premature draining protection, to prevent this issue occurring in future blades. Corrective action was made available as follows: ECO WO_37041, approved on June 5, 2007 adds spare batteries to all A4Es and A4Fs via the base assembly numbers 599-3081 (E's) and 599-3112 (F's). ECO WO_35103, approved on January 29, 2007 restructured the Battery for all Blade FRUs to package them separately and not assembled in the Coin Battery Socket. ECO WO_35677, approved on June 1, 2007 creates a "new" Battery FRU number (Sun p/n 150-4315-01). Corrective action was made available in Services via GSAP 3753 as of December 20, 2006. Resolution The battery by itself is a FRU, however for convenience of new installs, a loose 2nd battery will be included in the box of all shipped new blades (X-option and FRU) to be used in the event of an original battery failure.
