This Field Action Bulletin outlines the procedure necessary to allow a field engineer to complete the task of converting a Sun Fire x4600 Rev E system from 3+1 to 2+2 if a customer requests it. This free program is only available until the end of August 2007. Customers who originally bought the x4600 Rev E product will be allowed to take advantage of this upgrade program. Sun Fire x4600 M2 customers are not affected as those systems already ship with 2+2 Power Redundancy support for up to 8x95W and up to 4x120W processors. Root Cause Sun Fire X4600 Rev E based systems shipped prior to October 18, 2006 shipped with 3+1 Power Redundancy support. The factory started to implement 2+2 in Rev E based Sun Fire X4600 on October 18, 2006. Therefore units shipped after October 18, 2006 are not affected. Sun has determined a finite quantity shipped to customers globally with 3+1 power programmed in the CPLD on the X4600. Resolution This upgrade can only be carried out by a qualified Sun Services Representative. Before attempting this upgrade the Technician should read the document located at... http://panacea.uk.oracle.com/twiki/bin/view/Products/ProdKnowledgeSunFireX4600 ...entitled 'G4 Rev E 3+1 to 2+2 Power Conversion', and has all the necessary steps for completing the process. The Customer or Sun Sales Representative should order the appropriate upgrade part numbers to initiate the upgrade process. Part Number Description EIS-PWUPGD-E First 1-2 systems (2 hrs of service - includes travel) EIS-PWUPGDADD2-E Each additional 1-2 systems (1 hour of service) Example: If Customer "A" has 6 systems that require a power upgrade - the following part numbers would be ordered: Qty. 1 - EIS-PWUPGD-E First 2 machines - includes travel time Qty. 2 - EIS-PWUPGDADD2-E Additional 4 systems (2 systems/hr) The above assumes that all 6 systems are at the same customer site. Additional sites would require the base part number (EIS-PWUPGD-E) to be ordered again. Identification of Affected Parts (how to): Identifying a Rev E x4600 system can be done by listing the fru information from ipmitool or by checking what the BIOS version is on the system at the first American Trends BIOS POST screen displayed at the bottom. The BIOS version will start with 0ABHAxxx - where xxx is a version number. To check whether a Rev E based X4600 is eligible for the upgrade the CPLD version has to be read. CPLD device version 8 code supports 2+2 power. To read this information the system should be updated to BIOS version 41 or later, which can show the CPLD version. The latest BIOS can be obtained via the below URL; http://www.oracle.com/us/products/servers-storage/servers/previous-products/index.html For a list of the present and previous system BIOS versions, please see;http://panacea.uk.oracle.com/twiki/bin/view/Products/ProdPatchesSFX4600RevX
