Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1000815.1 : Sun Ultra 20 Workstation with 4 x 1GB of memory will not power on.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 201094 Product Sun Ultra 20 Workstation Part
Impact System will not power on. Contributing Factors Any Ultra 20 with 4 x 1GB of memory and a 300-1794-02 (or below) power supply is exposed. There is no Sun shipped configuration for the Ultra 20 with 4 x 1GB of memory. The 4 x 1GB memory configuration can only be obtained by upgrading the system via a memory xoption. Symptoms Sun Ultra 20 Workstations loaded with 4 Gigabites of memory and containing the -01 or -02 power supply can drive the power supply to the edge of its performance limits resulting in a system that will not power on. In the Bios it is possible to configure a system to either power down in the event of a power issue or reboot. If a system is set to power down and this issue occurs, it will simply power down and, upon manual re-power, it will power itself down again. If a system is set to automatically reboot and this issue occurs the system will enter a continuous cycle of automatically powering down and trying to reboot only to power down again. Corrective action has been made available in Manufacturing via ECO WO_32375 cut-over as of January 30, 2006, and in Services via GSAP 3309 issued on February 7,2006. Root Cause The validated root cause of this problem has been determined to be specific components within the power supply itself. Two capacitors and a diode have been changed to increase the power margins. Accordingly, the power supply has been dash rolled to -03 to reflect the upgraded version that has the margins to successfully support a 4 x 1GB memory configuration. The validated corrective action to resolve this issue in the field is to replace the power supply with an updated power supply should a system loaded with 4 x 1GB of memory fail to power on.
