Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1001340.1 : Solaris 10 preinstall image tries to start NIS despite selection of no name service during installation.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 201802 Product Sun Blade 1500 Workstation Bug Id <SUNBUG: 6315980> Impact Installing Solaris 10 from the pre-installed images shipped on the internal disk of a Sunblade 1500; reports errors on restarting, some of which suggest that NIS had been configured without a domainname. It appears as if NIS had been enabled even though not explicitly setup by the user. There is also a keyserv error and after the login prompt is displayed there is sunpcid error shown. The same behavior is not seen when installing the same release from the installation CDs. Symptoms After booting machine up from the preinstall image (PN 259-4420-0), selecting Solaris 10, then selecting "No Name Service" at the prompt in sysidns, the machine boots with the message: Rebooting with command: boot Boot device: disk File and args: SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic 64-bit Copyright 1983-2005 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved. Use is subject to license terms. SUNW,eri0 : 100 Mbps full duplex link up Hostname: longarm Feb 7 14:16:01 svc.startd[7]: svc:/network/nis/client:default: Method "/lib/svc/method/yp" failed with exit status 96. This system is configured with NFS version 4, which uses a domain name that is automatically derived from the system's name services. The derived domain name is sufficient for most configurations. In a few cases, mounts that cross different domains might cause files to be owned by "nobody" due to the lack of a common domain name. Do you need to override the system's default NFS version 4 domain name (yes/no) ? [no] : [ network/nis/client:default misconfigured (see 'svcs -x' for details) ] Feb 7 14:16:01 svc.startd[7]: svc:/network/rpc/keyserv:default: Method "/usr/sbin/keyserv" failed with exit status 96. [ network/rpc/keyserv:default misconfigured (see 'svcs -x' for details) ]
The machine stops at the usual point (the prompt for NFSv4 domain), but note the interspersed error messages from NIS attempting to start but failing.
svcs -x shows that the NIS service failed to come up: svc:/network/nis/client:default (NIS (YP) client) State: maintenance since Tue Feb 07 14:16:01 2006 Reason: Start method exited with $SMF_EXIT_ERR_CONFIG. See: http://sun.com/msg/SMF-8000-KS See: ypstart(1M) See: /var/svc/log/network-nis-client:default.log Impact: This service is not running.
and the logfile shows the reason the service failed: # cat /var/svc/log/network-rpc-keyserv:default.log [ Feb 7 14:16:01 Executing start method ("/usr/sbin/keyserv") ] [ Feb 7 14:16:01 Method "start" exited with status 96 ]
Workaround These following two commands will permanently disable the NIS client and the rpc/keyserv services on the machine. As root, run the commands: # svcadm disable nis/client # svcadm disable rpc/keyserv Previously Published As 102183 Internal Comments None. Related Information
