Impact

A large number of StorEdge 3xxx series controllers have been returned for repair and diagnosed as having corrupted firmware (FW) due to incomplete FW cross loading during controller replacement at customer sites.  This FW corruption can occur if the replaced controller is removed before it has had enough time to finish loading the FW from the other controller.

In a dual controller configuration, replacing a controller causes the newly inserted controller to automatically cross load or sync up with the surviving controller's firmware.  The cross load process can take at least 10 minutes to complete, and the newly inserted controller's LED will be amber during this time.

If the newly installed controller is removed for any reason during the period when the status LED is amber and the cross loading is in progress, the controller can be rendered inoperable and must be returned for repair.

Note that in single controller configurations this issue is nonexistent as no FW cross loading takes place.

Resolution

In a dual controller configuration, after inserting a new controller, allow at least 10 minutes for the FW cross load to complete.  Note that the newly inserted controller's LED will be amber while the cross load is in progress.  This is normal and does not indicate a faulty controller.  Removing the controller while the LED is amber would render it inoperable and it would have to be returned for repair.  After a successful cross load, the controller LED will change to solid green.
