Standard Sun methods for installation issues requiring parts replacement (see details below).
Impact
The FRU/spares and NOPRT (Non-Bookable Part Request Tool) processes are the standard Sun methods for dealing with installation issues requiring parts replacement. If parts designated as FRUs are missing, damaged, or DOA, these parts need to be replaced from available spares through normal logistics channels.
If the part is not a FRU, typically the NOPRT process is used.
However, the NOPRT process averages a 15 day turn-around. For the
large tape libraries (SL3000 and SL8500 specifically), this turn-around
time is usually inadequate.
Alternatively, it's not practical to
spare all of the library parts in order to have all parts stocked in
logistics. Therefore, to deal with this issue, WWOPS has created an
additional process to handle emergency parts replacement requirements
for *installations* only. While this process exists for all Sun
products, it is being published in this context for use with the
SL3000/SL8500 products as turn-around time can be critical during a
multi-day installation which might require resources to be flown in to
support the installation. If time is not critical, use the NOPRT
process to obtain non-FRU parts.
Contributing Factors
This knowledge asset clarifys the parts replacement processes to use, if needed, during an installation of a Sun StorageTek L8500 or Sun StorageTek L3000.
Symptoms
This FAB documents the various Sun processes to address parts replacement during a Sun StorageTek L8500 or L3000 Tape Library installation.
Corrective Action
Workaround
No workaround available. See Resolution section below.
Resolution
For parts related issues during installation only, the following evaluation should be made and the appropriate process must be used:
Option 1. If part is a FRU, replace it from the local parts depot.
Option 2. If part is not a FRU, use the NOPRT process. This process has an
average of 15 day receipt on replacement parts. The NOPRT process
may be accessed via the below URL;
http://wwopsrep-web.holland/apps/NOPRT/ Option 3. For installation *emergencies* when parts are needed quickly,
email "
Storage_NonFRUInstall_Rqst@Sun.COM" with the below
information and with the subject line of “NonFRU: <Customer_Name>”
- Your Contact info: (your name, email and phone number)
- The Customer info: (company name, city, state and country)
- Reason for urgency: (short justification statement)
- Ship To address: (where do you want the part shipped to)
When using the "
Storage_NonFRUInstall_Rqst@Sun.COM" alias, every effort will be made to get the replacement part out to the Field within 24 to 48 hours. However, in some cases these parts come from vendors where Sun cannot control delays from those vendors. Please use the emergency process (Option 3 above) judiciously, as the more that email alias is used to get parts, the slower the that process will be.
Every effort will be made by the team to respond to your request upon receipt with a status of when the request will be fulfilled.
