Product
Sun StorageTek 9990V System

Date of Resolved Release
06-May-2008

Fastening screws may become loose during shipment (see details below).

Impact

It has been found that the battery mounting hardware used on the Sun StorageTek 9990V System with an affected serial number (see Contributing Factors section) can allow the fastening screws to become loose during shipment.  This can lead to damage of the battery connectors if not corrected.

Contributing Factors

Sun StorageTek 9990V Systems with the following system serial numbers are affected:

Affected ST9990V serial numbers:
10136, 10143, 17001, 17068, 17084, 17106, 17113, 17115, 17143, 17203,
17206, 17213, 17230, 17261, 17268, 17275, 17278, 17284, 17286, 17288,
17290, 17318, 17338, 17389, 17430, 17443, 17444, 45016, 45017, 45021,
45022, 45025, 45053, 45059, 45067, 45092, 45147

Symptoms

This issue can lead to damage of the battery connectors.

Corrective Action

Workaround

No workaround available - see Resolution section below.

Resolution

If at anytime that you remove a battery box from a subsystem and the matching power connector which is attached to the backplane becomes loose or disconnected, please open escalation with TSC immediately.  If this is visually apparent, please take a photograph.

To eliminate the potential issue, Hitachi has released a mandatory field change bulletin (FCB DKC610I-H001) associated with ECN DKC610I-H008, "Modification of the Battery Box fix".  This change includes new battery brackets and screws.

Order and install this non-disruptive FCB as soon as possible.  All new ST9990V Systems shipping from factory should now have this FCB pre-installed.

Order and install the new battery retaining brackets as per the Hitachi FCB (Field Change Bulletin) and ECN at the below links, as soon as possible, for all ST9990V Systems installed in your area per the System Serial Numbers listed in the Contributing Factors section above.

   FCB:  http://se9990.eng/tech_docs/fab/battery/f6h001r4.pdf
   ECN:  http://se9990.eng/tech_docs/fab/battery/6h008r2.pdf

The new brackets are to be installed into all used and unused (optional) battery slots.  Please read the instructions in the FCB completely before performing this field change.

Note that the original brackets fastened each battery separately to the frame, but the new brackets now fasten two batteries together with the new common bracket and then to the frame. Therefore when replacing batteries per the Periodic replacement schedule or for other reasons, you must completely remove the new style battery bracket from a pair of batteries before a single battery can be removed.  Never remove or insert the batteries as a pair.

Note: These forms only have space for one serial number in the Serial Number
field.  Additional Serial Numbers can be added in the Special Instructions
or Comments section at the bottom of the form.

Parts shipped for each affected DKC with one order of FCB DKC610I-H001.

Photos of these parts are available at the below link:

Comments:

This issue was evaluated and determined not to meet Field Change Order (FCO) criteria due to the low number of affected systems and because parts are being supplied by Hitachi at no cost to Sun.  In addition, it is recommended that this service be combined with other maintenance activities to minimize associated labor costs.
