Impact

Customers may experience excessive drive failures.  Replacement drives may also show the same or similar symptom, but not necessarily immediately.  If the customer looses a disk that cannot be promptly replaced the loss of a second disk could expose customer to unnecessary risk of data loss.

Contributing Factors

Systems with CSM200 Drive Cage Midplane (Sun p/n 540-6545-xx) having a serial number between 0805DHG05N and 0810DHG00R are affected by this issue.

Contacts in the Amphenol connector can become deformed during drive connector insertion and may not spring back to it's normal position.  Depending on the extent of the damage this issue may be intermitent or solid.

Symptoms

HDD signal integrity errors.

Systems experiencing this issue will see intermittent drive off-line condition.  Drives will have appeared to have failed normally and or be in a by-passed state.  Subsequent replacements into the same slot may appear to resolve the issue but the drive may fail again.  Other times drive replacement will not change the failed condition.

Root Cause

The root cause was attributed to a pin placement/alignment issue within an Amphenol connector used on the midplane assemblies.  The supply vendor has stopped using the Amphenol connector and has switched to alternate suppliers.  Systems shipped after approximately March 10, 2008 are NOT impacted by this issue per StopShip/Purge P001-20497.

Corrective Action

Workaround:

No workaround available - see Resolution section below.

Resolution:

Upon failure only replace the 540-6545-03 (if in the suspected list below) with 540-6545-03 (or above) and not in the suspected list.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

Examine the rear of the CSM200 Chassis for the serial number.  If it falls between 0805DHG05N and 0810DHG00R, you must check it against the list of suspected trays found at...

If the serial number is on the list and the tray is exhibiting the issues described above, the midplane chassis assembly should be replaced.  Proper steps for replacing a failed midplane can be found in the Common Array Manager (CAM) Service Advisor or in the Drive Cage Replacement Procedure document EK1732-1-E2 for arrays that are managed by SANtricity.

Comments

Sun Engineering is confident that the suspect trays list linked above contains all of the affected units.  If you encounter these symptoms on a tray not on the list but within the range of serial numbers, you should conduct a close visual inspection of the connectors and, if there are any doubts, replace the midplane using the procedures outlined in CAM's Service Advisor or SANtricity's Recovery Guru.

This issue was fully evaluated as an FCO and determined not to meet criteria due to the relatively low number of suspected units and the small potential of exposure (approximately 3%) to this issue.
