Must follow Battery Management Procedures to guarantee the integrity of ST9900 Products.

Impact

There is a possible chance where cache memory or shared memory is invalidated in the event of a loss of
power if the battery is inadequately managed or maintained. This can also result in data loss if the batteries expire.

Contributing Factors

This issue impacts the following platforms:

ST9990V
ST9985V
ST9990
ST9985
ST9980
ST9970
ST9910
ST9960

Notes: Because batteries are used to maintain the integrity of cache and shared memory data, it is
extremely important to properly maintain batteries in all ST9900 subsystems. This includes proper care
of the batteries and subsystems while they are warehoused and also replacement of the batteries prior
to their projected end of life. All of these management procedures are in the maintenance manual
PERIODIC pages for each of the RAID models and also in several ECNs referenced by this FAB.

Symptoms

Possible chance of cache memory or shared memory is invalidated.

If these batteries expire and the customer looses power the result will be data loss.

Root Cause

Not applicable.

Corrective Action

Workaround
See below.

Resolution

Summary:

- always set the battery life
- order batteries in a timely fashion
- take corrective action on systems where the battery life is not set

As part of the SVP Install procedures, there is a field into which you must enter the number of days into
the future that you wish to be reminded to replace the battery.

Systems which do not have the battery life set into the SVP will not generate SIM when it is time to replace the batteries.

The FE will therefore not be prompted to order batteries when the Preventive Maintenance Battery replacement date arrives.

1. Follow the battery Management procedure as mentioned in below document links:
Note:  Ensure to always set the SVP Battery Life fields by following the Maintenance Manuals
SVP pages “Setting Battery Life".
http://se9990.eng/tech_docs/fab/battery_life/USP_USPV_USPVM_045681.pdf

2. For new systems, Factory at HDS will be entering the details into the "remaining Battery Life" field
the number of days corresponding to three years (dependent upon model) minus four months into the
future. When you install the machine, please verify that the number of days entered is correct based
upon the date on the battery assembly label and also on the ST9900 model that the battery is installed
into per the PERIODIC pages of Maintenance Manuals.

3. HDS also enahnced Hi-Track on how to query to determine which machines are coming due for battery
replacement and which machines do not have the battery date set.

For more details, refer "HiTrack Display and Search of Battery Life Information" section in below HDS alert link :
