Reason: FABs available to Partners and Internals only.

Applies to:

Sun Flash F5100 Array - Version: Not Applicable to Not Applicable - Release: N/A to N/A
Information in this document applies to any platform.
__________

Affected Parts:

501-7696 - Power Distribution Board

Symptoms

There are no symptoms to indicate the chassisSN needs to be reprogrammed after replacing the Power Distribution Board (PDB).

Impact

After replacing the PDB, you must reprogram the chassis SN to the newly installed PDB. Failure to do this causes CAM auto service requests (ASR) to fail.

If ASR fails, service requests will not be opened when there is a component fault on the F5100. Ensuring ASR works is a major corporate initiative.

Changes

Contributing Factors

The PDB is a component of the Jake chassis, which is usually used for hosts. On a Jake chassis host, ILOM will reprogram the chassis SN when the PDB is replaced.

The F5100 Array, unlike Jake chassis hosts, does not have the benefit of ILOM, so there is no means to reprogram the chassis SN to a replaced PDB.

Cause

Root Cause

Reprogramming the chassis SN when replacing the F5100 PDB is a requirement. In that there was no way to accomplish this on the F5100, the LF-PDB-Updater tool was created by the F5100 product team to meet this requirement.

Solution

Implementation: Reactive

Resolution

IMPORTANT: After successfully updating the chassis serial number to the PDB, DELETE the updater tool(s) from the customer system. If left behind, it's possible for customers to use the tool, exposing Oracle to loss of service revenue.

Follow the below procedure to reprogram the F5100 chassis serial number to the new PDB.

1. Download the LF-PDB_Updater and README here:

    http://pts-storage.west.sun.com/products/lflash/tools.html

->PDB_updater_tool_SPARC
->PDB_updater_tool_x86
->PDB_updater_tool_README

2. Follow the instructions in the README (covers SPARC and x86) file, included with the download.

Comments

Currently, there is no tool available for linux or windows platforms.
