Symptoms
I want to install Solaris[TM] 9 x86 off CD on my Sun Fire[TM] V20z via the serial console (ttya). The procedure requires a Device Configuration Diskette (DCA) to boot and configure the serial console for the install. I don't have a DCA. Is there a way to create a DCA?

Resolution
The following procedure will assist you with creating a Device Configuration Diskette (DCA)
* Log in as superuser on a Solaris x86 system to which a diskette drive and a CD-ROM drive are attached.
* Insert or the Solaris 9 Software x86 Platform Edition 2 of 2 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
* The Volume Manager mounts the disc.
* Change to the directory that contains the boot image:
# cd /cdrom/sol_9_ia/Solaris_9/Tools
* Insert a blank diskette or a diskette that can be overwritten in the diskette drive.
* Notify Volume Manager to check for new media:
# volcheck
* Format the diskette:
# fdformat -d -U
* Copy the file to the diskette:
# dd if=d1_image of=/vol/dev/aliases/floppy0 bs=36k
* Eject the diskette by typing eject floppy at the command line, and then manually ejecting the diskette from the drive.
* Modify the bootenv.rc File
* After creating a DCA diskette you must modify the bootenv.rc file on a different system to facilitate console redirection:
o Insert the diskette into a system with a diskette drive.
o Notify Volume Manager to check for new media:
% volcheck
o Open the bootenv.rc file in the vi editor:
% vi /floppy/floppy0/solaris/bootenv.rc
o Modify the input and output devices in the bootenv.rc file as follows:
setprop input-device ttya
setprop output-device ttya
* Initiate the Solaris x86 install using the DCA diskette. This diskette will contain the configuration info to tell Solaris[TM] to redirect output to the console. From then on, the output only goes to console even after the install is complete.

Additional Information
This procedure also applies to V40z.
