Symptoms
When resetting the BIOS and SP password on Sun Fire[TM] X4100/X4200 Servers, the host processor must be allowed to completely boot, in order for the password reset to take effect. If the instructions are not followed exactly, and host booted until the CMOS password cleared by jumper message is displayed, password reset will fail.

Resolution
In order for a successful password reset, when following the Resetting SP and BIOS Passwords Using Jumper P4 procedure, the host processors must be allowed to fully boot when the jumper is installed, in order for a successful reset.

Early versions of the Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 Servers Setup and Maintenance Guide (819-1157-13), did not clearly state the steps to successfully reset passwords.

Please see the latest version of the document for details. In particular:

Note - You must allow the entire server, not just the SP, to reboot to main power mode to complete the password reset. This is because the state of the P4 jumper cannot be determined without the host CPU running. Wait until the end of POST, when you see the CMOS password cleared by jumper messages, after which both the BIOS and SP passwords are reset.

The current version of the Sun Fire X4100/X4100 M2 and X4200/X4200 M2 Servers Service Manual (document number 819-1157) is available at the Sun Fire X4100/X4200 Server - Service and Diagnostics Documentation page.
