PreviouslyPublishedAs 205541 Symptoms After giving the following command, the console is rendered useless when logged in with ssh to the servers ILOM: -> start /SP/console Are you sure you want to start /SP/console (y/n)? y To stop, hit ESC ( It hangs at that point. Typing on the keyboard reflects nothing visually on the screen. Also, trying to stop, start or reset the SP does not help. Resolution Red Hat Linux by default does not have a "serial" Console set up. The following procedure would help to configure it: Edit the /boot/grub/grub.conf and menu.lst (if used). Note : menu.lst is a working copy of the grub.conf. Please make sure they match. # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd0,0) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/sda default=1 timeout=5 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz hiddenmenu title Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.6.9-22.0.2.EL) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-22.0.2.EL ro root=/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 console=tty1 console=ttyS0,9600 acpi=off rhgb initrd /initrd-2.6.9-22.0.2.EL.img title Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp) root (hd0,0) Displaying kernel messages on one or more consoles On each kernel line listed in /boot/grub/grub.conf and/or /etc/lilo.conf, append the correct "console" statement as a parameter to the kernel. The following is an example from grub.conf (my addition to the line appears in bold): kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-22.0.2.EL ro root=LABEL=/ console=tty1 console=ttyS0,9600 Provide a login prompt to the serial console In /etc/inittab, below the 6 mingetty lines, add the following agetty line: S0:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 9600 ttyS0 vt100 Allow root to login via the serial console To the end of /etc/securetty add the following line: ttyS0 Additional Information Additional Information Problem Resolution: <Document: 1006549.1> Sun Fire[TM] X4100/X4200 start /SP/console hangs, will help you to solve the same problem under Solaris[TM] Operating System.
