Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1005020.1 : Sun StorEdge[TM] S1 Array / Sun Fire[TM] V440 Server: Attaching the Array to the Server's Onboard SCSI Controller
PreviouslyPublishedAs 207040 Symptoms A poor SCSI negotiation speed occurs when a Sun StorEdge[TM] S1 array is attached to a Sun Fire[TM] V440 server's onboard SCSI external port. You can check the negotiation speed with the following: # prtpicl -v | grep sync :no-dma-interrupt-sync :target0-sync-speed 320000 :target1-sync-speed 320000 :target2-sync-speed 320000 :target0-sync-speed 40000 :target1-sync-speed 40000 :target2-sync-speed 40000 In the example, the second lot of disks are running at 40000, but the onboard SCSI controller in the Sun Fire V440 server is an Ultra320 SCSI, and in the Sun StorEdge S1 array is an Ultra160 SCSI. Therefore, the minimum speed should be 16000. Also, the following messages appear during boot: NOTICE: mpt1: fault detected in device; service still available NOTICE: mpt1: Connected command timeout for Target 0 WARNING: /pci@1f,700000/scsi@2,1 (mpt1): Target 0 reducing sync. transfer rate Resolution Add the following to the /kernel/drv/mpt.conf file and then reboot: name="mpt" parent="/pci@1f,700000" unit-address="2,1" scsi-options=0x1ff8; Compare the prtpicl output following this change to the prtpic1 output shown previously: # prtpicl -v | grep sync :no-dma-interrupt-sync :target0-sync-speed 320000 :target1-sync-speed 320000 :target2-sync-speed 320000 :target0-sync-speed 160000 :target1-sync-speed 160000 :target2-sync-speed 160000 You should also use the latest patches for the Sun Fire V440 onboard SCSI controller: Solaris[TM] 8 Operating System - 115274 and 115275 Solaris 9 Operating System - 116532 Product Sun Fire V440 Server Sun StorageTek S1 Array Sun Fire V440 146 GB 10000 rpm SCSI Hard Disk Drive for Netra st A1000/D1000 and Sun StorageTek S1 146 GB 10000 rpm SCSI Hard Disk Drive for Sun Fire V440 Internal Comments Audited/updated 12/03/09 - Ian.Macdonald@Sun.COM, Entry Level SPARC Content Team Member v440, S1 Previously Published As 75885 Change History Date: 2007-06-28 User Name: 7058 Action: Add Comment Comment: Notes for Normalizaton: This document is referenced by: 80089 which references 89047 Subset Root path: 75885-->80089-->89047-->89034-->89031-->89050 Project: Minnow Normalization Version: 0 Attachments This solution has no attachment |
