Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1006369.1 : Sun Fire[TM] V480 dialin modem doesn't work.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 208938 Symptoms I installed a modem on my Sun Fire[TM] V480 ttya serial port but I cannot get it to work. When I dial in to the modem attached to the V480 the modems connect but I do not get a login prompt from the V480. Resolution Below are recommended modems options for the V480. Currently, there is no dial in modem support on any builtin V480 (ttya) serial port. This includes the RSC card serial port. The primary reason; the ports were never designed for remote access via modems, only for local hardwired terminals. The built in serial port and the serial port on the RSC card use a RJ-45 style connector. These particular connectors are associated with the new Sun machines and lack a key modem control signal - Data Carrier Detect or DCD. This particular signal is the signal that is sent from the answering modem to a waiting login service (ttymon) to make the ttymon proxess aware that an attached modem has received an incoming connection. Without this signal there is no way for the login service to know the modem is requesting a login. 1.) Use built in 56k modem on the RSC card (501-5856). This modem has a RJ-11 telephone connector, you attach a standard dedicated telephone line direct to the port. You also configure the modem using RSCADM. Reference 'Remote System Control 2.2.2 Users Guide', 816-3314 for instructions on configuring RSC modem. 2.) Install serial pci card. Recommended SUN serial cards. - Sun X-Option X2156A Serial Asynchronous Interface (SAI/P) 3.0 (for solaris 8) which provides 8 x DB25 serial ports in a connector box. - Antares PCI P-0002 Dual Serial Communications Controller Additional Sun-supported serial cards. http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/stdpci/STDPCI0.html These serial cards provide full modem support and configurable using standard Solaris[TM] methods. 3.) Install modem using a USB-serial adapter. For a list of SUN recommended USB-serial adapters. http://www.sun.com/io_technologies/usb/USB0.html You install the adapter between the V480 USB port and the modem. You configure the modem for bi-directional services using standard Solaris[TM] modem procedures. The modem device would be term/0. Additional Information This doc does not apply to dial out modems on builtin serial ports because dialout modems do not require DCD.
