Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1007842.1 : Sun Fire[TM] V480/V880: Fatal Reset diagnostic output is not captured by the RSC card
PreviouslyPublishedAs 210835 Symptoms Despite the system being setup correctly to redirect input, output and diagnostics to the RSC with the following OBP parameters set: input-device=rsc-console output-device=rsc-console diag-out-console=true The system had a fatal reset and the diagnostic output was not captured. Examining the buffers on the RSC card using the consolehistory command reports only "ERROR: Hardware FATAL RESET Recovery" or "Initiating Hardware FATAL RESET recovery" This is not sufficient to confirm the cause of the fatal reset. Resolution To ensure that in the future this data is captured by the RSC card, confirm the RSC patch level installed is sufficient. The release notes for the Sun Fire[TM] V480/V880 include a "Highly Recommended Patch List" which has the following RSC patches listed. Solaris[TM] 8 RSC 2.2 111500-09 or higher Without this patch applied the console buffers are only 16k which is not sufficient to capture the full Fatal Reset output. RSC versions 2.2.2 or higher include the increased buffer size but the firmware on the RSC card must have been upgraded to match. As part of the RSC patch installation procedure the RSC firmware is manually updated so it is necessary to check the version of RSC software installed on the host, RSC patch level and RSC firmware version. To obtain the RSC software verion on the host system run; # pkginfo -l SUNWrsc | grep VERSION To obtain the RSC firmware version, on the RSC run; rsc> version To confirm the RSC patch revision on the host system run; # showrev -p |grep 111500 (for RSC 2.2) # showrev -p |grep 113388 (for RSC 2.2.1) Relief/Workaround On a host with network access to the RSC card perform the following 1) Start logging the output to the terminal, for example with: # script <filename> 2) Telnet to the RSC card and connect to the console. # telnet <name or ip_address> rsc> console Should a fatal reset occur the output will be captured in <filename>. 3) To stop logging the console, quit the console session, logout from the RSC and close the script. ~. rsc> logout # ctrl+d Additional Information Additional Resources: The latest version of the RSC software can be downloaded from http://www.sun.com/servers/rsc.html Product Sun Fire V480 Server Sun Fire V880 Server Internal Comments Audited/updated 12/03/09 Silvana.Villamil@SUN.com, Entry Level SPARC Content Team Member v480, v880, rsc, fatal reset Previously Published As 83162 Change History Date: 2005-11-13 User Name: 97961 Action: Approved Comment: - Converted to STM formatting for better readability - Changed title to comply to the standard format - Applied trademarking Attachments This solution has no attachment |
