Symptoms
When updating the firmware, flashupdate or lom -G may error with:
Programming LOM(Lights Out Management) failed with error: Resource temporarily unavailable
Example situation:
The following example show the "lom -G" method for updating system firmware, but this can also take place utilizing "flashupdate".  This example was from a Sun Fire[TM] v1280 system where the update failed during the update of the cpu/mem boards:
# lom -G lw8cpu.flash
This program will replace LOM firmware with version 5.17.0
Are you sure you want to continue?
Enter 'C' and return to Continue or anything else to Terminate
C
Programming LOM(Lights Out Management) failed with error: Resource temporarily unavailable
#

Resolution
To avoid the failure message, you might need to reset the system controller (SC) and retry the flash.
The following example utilizes ScApp version 5.17.x, but it is suggested that you maintain the most recent version of ScApp (which is 5.20.x and is available via patch 114527).

Prior to beginning the firmware update procedure reset the SC:
lom> resetsc -y
1. Upgrade the firmware on the SC:
# lom -G sgsc.flash
# lom -G sgrtos.flash
2. Escape to lom> by entering the following:
# .
3. Reset the SC:
lom>resetsc -y
4. After you reset the SC, proceed with upgrading the boards in the system:
# lom -G lw8cpu.flash
# lom -G lw8pci.flash
5. Escape to lom> again, shutdown the system, and then power everything on again.
lom>shutdown
lom>poweron
(Note:  The shutdown command shuts down the Solaris[TM] Operating System, so make sure the server is ready to be unavailable for the duration of the shutdown and poweron steps)

If the resetsc step is not performed you will not be able to finish the procedure without a problem.  If you did perform the reset, and you still receive the "Resource temporarily unavailable" error message then try resetting the SC once again. This should allow you to avoid the error message.
