Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1012489.1 : Sun StorEdge[TM] 5210 NAS Appliance: LUN comprised of internal drives OFFLINE after reboot
PreviouslyPublishedAs 217207 Symptoms After having maintenence done on it, a Sun StorEdge[TM] 5210 NAS Appliance, was rebooted. It was found that logical unit number 0(LUN 0)(the volume/LUN composed of the internal disks) was in an "Offline" state, although the LUNs(two of them in the example below) made up of the drives in the attached JBOD were fine. The bootlog shows that none of the 6 internal disks were discovered(only 12 drives detected). Messages from the bootlog: ----------------------------------------------------------- I Detected 12 drives I Chn - Tgt I 0 - 0: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 0 - 1: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 0 - 2: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 0 - 3: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 0 - 4: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 0 - 5: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 0 - 8: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 0 - 9: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 0 - 10: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 0 - 11: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 0 - 12: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 0 - 13: Hot Spare, Size 140005MB I LUN 0: State: Offline, RAID Level: 5, Cache: Write Thru I Size: 556944MB Stripe Size: 64KB Drive Members: 5 I Read Ahead Policy: Read Ahead I LUN 1: State: Online, RAID Level: 5, Cache: Write Thru I Size: 557056MB Stripe Size: 64KB Drive Members: 5 I Read Ahead Policy: Read Ahead I LUN 2: State: Online, RAID Level: 5, Cache: Write Thru I Size: 696320MB Stripe Size: 64KB Drive Members: 6 I Read Ahead Policy: Read Ahead ----------------------------------------------------------- Resolution Move the cable to the LEFT SCSI port, and reboot the NAS unit. This will resolve the issue. This is the "correct" output for this configuration: ----------------------------------------------------------- I Detected 18 drives I Chn - Tgt I 0 - 0: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 0 I 0 - 1: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 0 I 0 - 2: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 0 I 0 - 3: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 0 I 0 - 4: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 0 I 0 - 5: Hot Spare, Size 140005MB I 1 - 0: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 1 - 1: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 1 - 2: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 1 - 3: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 1 - 4: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 1 I 1 - 5: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 1 - 8: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 1 - 9: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 1 - 10: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 1 - 11: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 1 - 12: Online, Size 140005MB, Member of LUN 2 I 1 - 13: Hot Spare, Size 140005MB I LUN 0: State: Online, RAID Level: 5, Cache: Write Thru I Size: 556944MB Stripe Size: 64KB Drive Members: 5 I Read Ahead Policy: Read Ahead I LUN 1: State: Online, RAID Level: 5, Cache: Write Thru I Size: 557056MB Stripe Size: 64KB Drive Members: 5 I Read Ahead Policy: Read Ahead I LUN 2: State: Online, RAID Level: 5, Cache: Write Thru I Size: 696320MB Stripe Size: 64KB Drive Members: 6 I Read Ahead Policy: Read Ahead ----------------------------------------------------------- The reason is that the SCSI cable to the JBOD array was mistakenly connected to the RIGHT SCSI port on the 2-port SCSI card in the SE5210 NAS unit. According to the "Hardware Installation, Configuration, and User Guide", the cable should not be connected to the RIGHT scsi port on this card. If this cable is accidentally connected there, the internal disks conflict with the disks in the attached JBOD array, and so are not discovered correctly during boot.
