Symptoms
Console Redirection settings in BIOS can prevent Red Hat Linux Enterprise 3.0 AS from booting.

Boot Problem: After initialization, the boot loader screen is expected. Instead,
the screen is blank, with the exception of an "L" on the second line of the
monitor. When monitoring boot from the "platform console", a character similar
to a "y" with an umlaut ".." on top, scrolls off the screen. There is no serial
console access.

Resolution
Press "F2" for Setup, when displayed on screen.

The Phoenix BIOS screen will be displayed after initialization.

  • Select the "Advanced" Tab
  • Select the "Console Redirection" selection.
  • Set "Continue C.R. after POST=Off"
