Sun StorageTek 3511 SATA Array

Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 5056389>

Date of Resolved Release
20-OCT-2005

Impact

SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) devices on a Sun StorEdge 3511 Array with SATA router firmware version DP0554e may go offline. As a result, a complete loss of access to the data on the array may occur until the controllers are reset or the array is power-cycled.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following releases:

  • Sun StorEdge 3511 FC Array with SATA router firmware version DP0554e and without firmware version DP0555a

To determine the version of the SATA router firmware on a Sun StorEdge 3511 FC Array, run the following command:

    sccli> show sata-router
    Encl-ID Encl-SN Ch Slot Rev Boot-rev CSB HW-rev ST-rev
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    0 008586 2 upper DP0554e 0548 0500 11 0552
    1 0084A0 2 upper DP0555a 0548 0500 11 0552
    3 0087F5 2 upper DP0554e 0548 0500 11 0552
    4 00885A 2 upper DP0555a 0548 0500 11 0552
    5 008801 2 upper DP0555a 0548 0500 11 0552
    0 008586 3 lower DP0554e 0548 0500 11 0552
    1 0084A0 3 lower DP0555a 0548 0500 11 0552
    3 0087F5 3 lower DP0554e 0548 0500 11 0552
    4 00885A 3 lower DP0555a 0548 0500 11 0552
    5 008801 3 lower DP0555a 0548 0500 11 0552

In the example above, the array contains I/O modules with SATA router firmware at the older DP0554e version.

Note: It is possible that replacement I/O Modules with Part Number 370-6774-01 may contain the older DP0554e firmware. Should an I/O module require replacement, make sure the part number of the replacement part is 370-6774-02 or higher, as this revision will have the newer DP0555a firmware.

Symptoms

If access to the SES devices is lost, the "sccli" commands "show ses" and "show disks" will not return any results.

Symptoms can appear anytime after a replacement I/O module containing version DP0554e of the SATA router firmware is inserted into an expansion unit, or at anytime if an I/O module in the array is currently running with this down-revved firmware.

Symptoms are precipitated by a LIP occurring on the internal fiber-channel loop of the array. A LIP, which is a normal and uneventful occurrence on a fibre-channel array, can be caused by any number of things, including removal or insertion of a disk drive, or a disk drive failure.

Workaround

There is no workaround. Please see the "Resolution" section below.

Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

  • Sun StorEdge 3511 FC Array with SATA router firmware version DP0555a

Note: Use the instructions found in patch 113724-01 to upgrade the SATA router firmware from DP0554e to DP0555a.
