Impact
Sun StorageTek 5220 Controller trays may not recognize drive types in an expansion tray with 500GB SATA HDDs. Upon initial installation access to the drives is not recognized.
Contributing Factors
This issue can occur on the following platforms:
- Sun StorageTek 5220 with firmware Ver 4.21 B123 (as delivered in patch 119353-03) or later
Note: This issue occurs when using an expansion tray with 500GB SATA drives connected.

Symptoms
With latest firmware installed and with just the controller head hooked up, everything appears in good order. Using an expansion tray with 500GB SATA drives connected, the NAS head sees one RAID 0 LUN, 0meg, and other LUNs that cannot be selected to delete. It will not recognize the drive type. NRM (from windows or x86) shows it is not compatible with the new firmware.
Workaround
A workaround is available but it requires a service procedure to accomplish.

Business Unit Group: NAS Systems
NOTE: Please file an escalation as needed to receive help from engineering to
support your customer with this issue.
Requirements:
The initial installation is plug in and play. There are no special
setups other than connecting the Fiber cable between the NAS
Appliance and the Storage tray and turning on the power.
This proceedure is meant for service personnel only in the event of a
Controller replacment for the ST5220 NAS Appliance.
NOTE: a special cable is required that the customer will not have.
The following is a list of required equipment needed to perform a
Controller replacement:
- Serial adapter, Mini DIN to DB9 male connection or Sun Mini DIN to
RJ45 cable part # F530-3544-01 and RJ45 to DB9 adapter part #
530-3100-01.
- Standard DB9 Female to DB9 Female null modem serial cable.
- Laptop computer with Hyper Terminal or equivalent communication
software and a serial port.
- Download to Laptop Controller Firmware
(RC_06192510_amethyst3_apollo_399X.dlp)
- Download to Laptop Controller NVSRAM Firmware (N399X-619843-903.dlp)
CSM2 Simplex Controller Replacement Procedure:
1. Shutdown ST5220 NAS Appliance Via the Web GUI or the LCD panel.
2. Once the ST5220 NAS is Shutdown power-down both power supplies on
the CSM2 Simplex Storage Array and any Expansion Trays.
3. Back-out all hard drives *Except the Hot spare* located at slot #8,
but DO NOT remove the drives from their slot.
Note: Drives will remain backed out during Controller Firmware
Loading.
4. Label and remove all cables from Controller.
5. Remove defective Controller.
6. Install replacement Controller FRU and reinstall cables.
7. Connect a Mini DIN to DB9 adapter cable and DB9 to DB9 female NUL
Modem Cable from the Controller to the serial port on the laptop,
or SUN Mini DIN to RJ45 cable part # F530-3544-01 and RJ45 to DB9
adapter 530-3100-01.
8. On the Laptop, open up a Hyper Terminal (COM port 38400 BAUD,
8,N,1,N).
9. Power-up both power supplies on the CSM2 Simplex Storage Array
with the replacement Controller only.
10. Password: y2llojp (if needed)
11. At the prompt type shift M to load the Boot Operations Menu.
12. Select option 2 (Download permanent File)
13. On the Hyper Terminal Tool Bar select the Transfer tab and select
Send File in the pull-down menu.
14. Browse for the Controller FW file

For the Protocol use Xmodem, then click Send. The file transfer
will take approximately 50 minutes.
15. Once the transfer is complete select Option 2 (Download permanent
File) again.
16. On the Hyper Terminal Tool Bar select the Transfer tab and select
Send File in the pull-down menu.
17. Browse for the Controller NVSRAM FW file N399X-619843-903.dlp. For
the Protocol use Xmodem, then click Send. The file transfer will
take approximately 2 minutes.
18. When File transfers are complete type *sysReboot, *this will
reboot the Controller and run the Firmware that was downloaded
to the Controller.
19. Verify download by typing "moduleList" for Controller Firmware
version (RC_06192510_amethyst3_apollo_399X.dlp), "arrayPrintSummary"
to verify the state the Controller is in (should be
Simplex mode), and type shift M Boot Operations Menu select
option 4 (Dump NVSRAM Group) and then option 1 (Board) for
NVSRAM Firmware version (N399X-619843-903.dlp).
If the controller is still in duplex mode run the following
commands:
-> loadDebug
-> setSimplexMode_MT 2
20. Power-down both power supplies on the CSM2 Simplex Storage Array
with the replacement Controller, and reseat all 15 Hard Drives.
21. Power-up both power supplies on the CSM2 Simplex Storage Array
with the replacement Controller and any Expansion trays if present.
22. When CSM2 Simplex Storage Array Controller reads 8.5 power-up the
ST5220 NAS Appliance.
23. Open up the NAS GUI and under File Volume Operations choose View
Volume Partitions and verify file volumes customer created.
24. If file Volumes check out Controller FRU replacement is completed
Additional Comments:
CSM2 Simplex Storage Array is Engenio's second generation Common Storage
Module with 16 drive capacity in a 3U tray enclosure with one Controller
module. The tray is used as the backend storage for SUN's ST5220
(ThunderBird) NAS Appliance.
Root Cause
Other Sun Arrays (6130, 6140, etc) all key off controller part numbers
at final config for firmware and NVSRAM (this is how the XML generator
was setup). However, because the Falcon (5320) and Thunderbird (5220)
have unique NVSRAMs, but do not have a unique part number for their
controllers an override needs to be added to the XML generator for every
upper level Falcon and Thunderbird part number. Unfortunately only the
Falcon and Thunderbird part numbers that we did qualifications for got
added to the XM All non-qualed Falcon and Thunderbird part
numbers were loaded with the default NVSRAM based on their controller
part numbers.
Incorrect NVSRAM loaded at the factory...NVSRAM is from a 6140
399x-616843-010 versus the NAS edition which is N399X-619843-903.dlp.
