Under highly specific conditions, the AMD-8131 PCI-X tunnel may provide stale data to the PCI-X card:

Impact

Under highly specific conditions, the AMD-8131 PCI-X tunnel may provide stale data to the PCI-X card. The system will then become non-responsive, panic or target abort.

Note: AMD has issued "Errata #62" detailing this condition. This is available at:

http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/26310_AMD-8131_HyperTransport_PCI-X_Tunnel_Revision_Guide_rev_3_18.pdf
Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms:

  • Sunfire X4100 servers with a 2/4Gb FC PCI-X HBA (both Emulex & QLogic)
  • Sunfire X4200 servers with a 2/4Gb FC PCI-X HBA (both Emulex & QLogic)

Note 1: This issue only occurs when using large block size during writes.

Note 2: Other PCI-X Cards affected by the AMD8131 Erratum 62 may include but is not limited to:

    10GBE (Kirkwood, X5544A-4)
    SCSI (Meteor, SGXPCI1SCSILM320-Z)
    Mellanox IB (IB-HCA, X1236A-Z)

 Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, data corruption, non-responsive system, target abort, and infinite retry of the PCI-X bus may be experienced.

Workaround

To work around the described issue, limit the transaction length via driver programming of the PCI-X card to 1K bytes or fewer.
