Solution Type Sun Alert Sure Solution 1000556.1 : Insertion or Removal of a RAID Controller on Sun StorEdge 5310 or 6130 Array May Cause the Alternate Controller to Reboot
PreviouslyPublishedAs 200702 Product Sun StorageTek 5310 NAS Appliance Sun StorageTek 6130 Array Bug Id <SUNBUG: 6254438> Date of Resolved Release 11-MAY-2007 Impact Insertion or removal of a RAID controller as part of routine maintenance activity on Sun StorEdgeTek 5310 or 6130 arrays may cause the alternate controller in the same tray to boot, causing a complete loss of access to the array until the alternate boots up. Contributing Factors This issue can occur on the following platforms:
To determine the version of firmware on the system, the sscs(1M) command can be run as in the following example: # /opt/se6x20/cli/bin/sscs list array <array name> Array: <array name> Array Type: 6130 Serial Number: SUN.54062390150.0440AWF007 Firmware Version: 06.19.23.10 ... Symptoms This issue presents itself during ordinary replacement of a controller or during the replacement of a cache battery during normal maintenance. Data hosts using the impacted arrays will see evidence of a loss of access in the host messages file. The messages vary from platform to platform, but will indicate:
Management hosts attempting get status information from the array may get a communication error. Communications errors may present themselves during any activity. These lapses in managing the array are brief(up to 2 minutes), as the booting controller will allow management access as it finishes booting. For 5310 and 5320 NAS Appliances, users will be unable to access shares or NFS export filesystems. Workaround To avoid this issue (for systems without the current firmware), it is recommended that any activity requiring maintenance of the array controller or array controller cache battery be considered an offline operation. As such, these types of maintenance activities should be performed during an outage of all data services provided by the array. Resolution This issue is addressed on the following platforms:
Note: The above firmware revision is bundled with Sun StorEdge 6130 Array Configuration Services 1.2 or later software. It is recommended that customers upgrade the management host to Common Array Manager (CAM) 5.1 or later, along with the firmware bundled within it (6.19.25.10). Common Array Manager (CAM) 5.1 is available for download at http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=45d3689d References<SUNPATCH: 119351-04>Previously Published As 102912 Internal Comments Internal Contributor/submitter curtis.decotis@sun.com Internal Eng Business Unit Group NWS (Network Storage) Internal Eng Responsible Engineer brian.hanvey@sun.com Internal Services Knowledge Engineer david.mariotto@sun.com Internal Escalation ID 22202968, 43782256 Internal Resolution Patches 119351-04 Internal Sun Alert Kasp Legacy ID 102912 Internal Sun Alert & FAB Admin Info Critical Category: Availability ==> HA-Failure Significant Change Date: 2007-05-11 Avoidance: Patch Responsible Manager: mark.briel@sun.com Original Admin Info: [WF 11-May-2007, dave m: review completed, release] [WF 10-May-2007, dave m: sending for review] [WF 10-May-2007, dave m: draft created] Product_uuid 63654ce5-f88d-11d8-ab63-080020a9ed93|Sun StorageTek 5310 NAS Appliance 8252cb91-d771-11d8-ab52-080020a9ed93|Sun StorageTek 6130 Array ReferencesSUNPATCH:119351-04Attachments This solution has no attachment |
