Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 6256052>

Date of Resolved Release
29-JUN-2005

Impact

After a power cycle on a host that has a Sun StorEdge 1 Gb PCI Dual FC Host Adapter(+) HBA installed, the host no longer has access to the array.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms:

  • Sun StorEdge 3510 or 3511 FC array with Sun StorEdge 1GB PCI Dual FC Host Bus Adapter(+)

Symptoms

After a power cycle on the host, the storage presented by the 3510 or 3511 array will not be available to the host. This issue can be seen in the "probe-scsi-all" after the power cycle:

    Sun Ultra 60 UPA/PCI (2 X UltraSPARC-II 296MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.31, 768 MB memory installed, Serial #10149614.

Workaround

To work around the described issue, set the data rate on the 3510 or 3511 (on the host connected channel) from AUTO to 1G. This parameter can be set in the firmware application as follows:

  1. Choose "View and Edit Channels"
  2. Click on the host channel(s) connected to the HBA
  3. For "Data Rate" choose "1G"

Resolution

Please see the "Relief/Workaround" section above for the final resolution.

Internal Comments

The SE3510/3511 contain a Programmable Logic Device (PLD) that controls the port bypass circuits (PBC) on all ports. The PLD also considers auto-negotiation by employing a method that attempts to determine the source transfer rate, 1Gb or 2Gb. The method does not operate correctly in all configurations when attempting to source a 1Gb transfer rate.
