Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 6516683>

Date of Resolved Release
04-APR-2007

Impact

Memory shortage on Sun Fire 12K/15K CP1500 System Controllers with 256MB running Solaris 10 and System Management Services (SMS) 1.6 may cause domain outages, longer than normal domain recovery times, and delayed DR operations.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms

  • Sun Fire 12K/15K with CP1500 System Controllers with 256MB running Solaris 10 and SMS 1.6

Note: Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 are not affected by this issue.

To determine if a system is equipped with a CP1500 System Controller, the following command can be used:

    # uname -i
    SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIi-cEngine

If the system is equipped with a CP1500 System Controller, the output of the "uname -i" command will be the same as the example above.

To determine the amount of memory on the system, the following command can be used:

    # /usr/platform/sun4u/sbin/prtdiag | grep "Memory size"
    Memory size: 256 Megabytes

Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, domain outages, longer than normal domain recovery times, and delayed response for SMS commands (show*) may be experienced.

To determine if a system has been affected by this issue, check the system scan rate and threads waiting by using the vmstat(1M) command:

  $ vmstat 3

Note: The "w","sr", and "de" column should usually be 0.

Workaround

To run Solaris 10 with System Management Services (SMS) 1.6 on an E12/15K SC, the system controller must be upgraded to a CP2140 with 1gb of memory.

OR

Run Solaris 10 on all E12/15K Domains AND run Solaris 9 with System Management Services (SMS) 1.6 on the System Controllers (SC) only. In this configuration, no system controller upgrades are needed.

Resolution

Please see the Relief/Workaround section above for the final resolution to this issue.

Internal Comments
From Eng: Othello+ upgrade kit part number is CP2140S-650-1GB-4.
You will need to order a quantity of 2 per platform.
Suggested Remediation Strategy:
If the customer wants to run SMS 1.6 with Solaris 10 on an E12/15K
with CP1500 SCs:
1. First, the Account Team should suggest to the Customer to run Solaris
9 with System Management Services (SMS) 1.6 on the SCs and Solaris 10
on the Domains. If this is acceptable, no CP2140s controller upgrades are needed.
2. If this is not acceptable, and the Customer insists on running S10 with
SMS 1.6 on the E12/15K SCs and the Domains, a CIC should be entered as a
"Known Quality Issue" to order 2 Othello upgrade kits per platform, referencing
SunAlert 102819. The CIC should also state that the CIC request should be
routed to the Quality Office for consideration and/or approval.
