Expansion of Snapshot Repository on Sun StorageTek 6140 and 6540 Arrays May Freeze and Result in Write Cache Becoming Disabled

1. Impact

For Sun StorageTek 6140 and 6540 arrays with firmware 07.10.25.10, an expansion of a snapshot repository may freeze and result in write cache becoming disabled. As a consequence of this Bug, it may be necessary to wipe the array configuration and recreate it.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms:
  • Sun StorageTek 6140 Array with firmware 07.10.25.10
  • Sun StorageTek 6540 Array with firmware 07.10.25.10
The current firmware version can be determined by using the CAM GUI or by using the the 'sscs' CLI, as in the following example:
# /opt/SUNWsesscs/cli/bin/sscs list array <array_name>
Array: <array_name>
Array Type:          6140
Serial Number:       xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Firmware Version:    07.10.25.10
[...]

3. Symptoms

When attempting to expand a snapshot volume, the expansion never completes and performance drops due to the cache becoming disabled.

Note: A SupportData collection for the array must be obtained in order to confirm this issue.

4. Workaround

To avoid this issue, do not expand a snapshot repository if the array has firmware 07.10.25.10.

If a snapshot repository expansion is performed and this issue is encountered, it will be necessary to contact Sun Support Services for the proper recovery procedure.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed on the following platforms:
  • Sun StorageTek 6140/6540 Arrays with firmware 07.50.08.10 or later (as bundled with CAM release 6.4.0)
CAM 6.4.0 can be downloaded from the Sun Download Center at the StorageTek Common Array Manager URL.
