Initial shipments of Sun Blade X6450 Server Modules were shipped without restoring some of the Default BIOS Settings

1. Impact

Initial shipments of Sun Blade X6450 Server Modules were shipped without restoring some of the BIOS settings to factory default. Customers who receive any of these blades will need to reset the BIOS to the factory defaults.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platform:
  • Sun Blade X6450 Server Module (shipped prior to May, 2008)

3. Symptoms

When connecting to the serial "Dongle Cable" connection there will be no output.  Some server modules shipped with the serial port BIOS setting were set erroneously to "system" rather than the correct default setting which is "BMC".  Another symptom of this is that the SP IP address is already preset to a static IP address.

4. Workaround

To work around this issue, connect the "Dongle Cable" to the UCP port on the front panel of the blade.  Then attach a monitor, keyboard and mouse to the Dongle,  and then do the following:

1. Boot the Sun Blade 6450 Server Module and enter the BIOS set up menu by pressing the F2 key during boot

2. Press F9 to load optimal defaults.

3. The next step is to set the ELOM IP address. Please follow the instructions from the Sun Blade X6450 Installation Guide at http://nsg-rtfm-twiki.sfbay.sun.com/twiki/pub/Main/HerculesRelease/820-3535-11.pdf with instructions for setting the ELOM IP Address.

The ELOM IP Address can also be set using the BIOS by doing the following:
  1. Select the "Server" tab and hit Enter
  2. Select "Set AST2000 LAN configuration" and hit Enter
  3. Select "IP address" and hit Enter

If the Service Network environment is a STATIC Network, then:
  1. Set the "IP Address mode" to STATIC
  2. Enter the IP address in "IP Address" field
  3. Press the "Escape" key to go back and select "Subnet Mask"
  4. Press F10 to save the settings and reboot

If the environment is DHCP, then:
  1. Set the "IP Address mode" to DHCP
  2. Press F10 to save the settings and reboot

5. Resolution

The Sun Blade X6450 Server Modules are now shipping with the correct BIOS defaults set as of May 2008.
