Sun System Firmware Patch 139442-01 (WITHDRAWN) Leaves Sun Netra T5220 Platform Unable to Power On Host After a Power Cycle

1. Impact

Upgrading the Sun System Firmware to version 7.2.0 using patch 139442-01 on a Sun Netra T5220 Server may cause host power-on failure. This happens only if the power has been disconnected from the system since the firmware upgrade. When this occurs, the system will power on and will immediately be powered off by the Service Processsor (SP) due to environmental faults.

The above mentioned patch has been withdrawn and is no longer available on SunSolve.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platform:

SPARC Platform:
  • Sun Netra T5220 Server (with Sun System Firmware version 7.2.0 as delivered in patch 139442-01) and without patch 139442-02
Notes:

1. The x86 platform is not affected by this issue. No other Sun systems are affected by this issue.
2. Sun Netra T5220 Server with Sun System Firmware version 7.1.x is not impacted by this issue.
3. This issue will occur only if the system power is disconnected anytime after the Sun System Firmware upgrade to 7.2.0.

To determine the firmware version on the system, log in to the service processor and run the 'showhost' command as in the following example:
sc> showhost
Sun System Firmware 7.2.0 2008/12/11 17:57
Host flash versions:
Hypervisor 1.7.0 2008/12/11 13:38
OBP 4.30.0 2008/12/11 12:15
POST 4.30.0 2008/12/11 12:50

3. Symptoms

Soon after the 'poweron' command is issued to the Service Processor, messages similar to the following may return on the console and the host will be powered off:
Fault | critical: SP detected fault at time Tue Jan 20 14:22:47 2009. V_VDDIO at /SYS/MB
has exceeded low non-recoverable threshold.
Fault | critical: SP detected fault at time Tue Jan 20 14:22:50 2009. V_+1V5_VDD at /SYS/MB
has exceeded low non-recoverable threshold.
Fault | critical: SP detected fault at time Tue Jan 20 14:22:54 2009. V_+3V3_STBY at /SYS/MB
has exceeded low non-recoverable threshold.
Chassis | major: V_VBAT at /SYS/MB has exceeded low warning threshold.
Chassis | critical: Critical voltage value : host is being powered off
Chassis | critical: CRITICAL ALARM is set
Chassis | critical: Host has been powered off

4. Workaround

To avoid this issue, do not install the firmware delivered in 139442-01. If 139442-01 firmware has already been installed, replace it with the corrected firmware as described below.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed on the following platform:

SPARC Platform
  • Sun Netra T5220 Server with firmware version 7.2.1.a (as delivered in patch 139442-02 or later)
