ALOM faq for sun equip

Q. What versions of Advanced Lights Out Management (ALOM) are available?

A. Presently, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5.x and 1.6 of ALOM are in use but only version 1.6 is available for download.

Q. From where are new versions of ALOM obtained?

A. Sun Advanced Lights Out Manager is available under the Systems Management heading at Sun Download Center.
The best way to get patches now is from MOS:

- Login to MOS and go to the Patches & Updates tab.
- In the patch search field click on Product or Family
- In the product field put in 'Advanced Lights Out Manager' and click the search button.
- The next page will provide a patch name 10263984
- Click the patch number 10263984 and the page will show a button for Download
- Click 'Download' and obtain the file shown: p10263984_160_Generic.zip
- Unzip the file, it will provide the following firmware:
  * ALOM_1.6.10_fw_hw0.tar.gz  -   ALOM 1.6.10 Firmware for Sun Fire V125, V210, V240, V250, V440, and Netra 210, 240 and 440
  * ALOM_1.6.10_fw_hw8.tar.gz  -   ALOM 1.6.10 Firmware for Sun Fire V215, V245 and V445

Q. How is ALOM installed?

A. Obtain installation instructions from the downloaded ALOM package (see step A).

Q. Is ALOM still available in the form of a patch?

A. No, it was never a patch on SunSolve(SM). It is a download only.

Q. Which versions of ALOM are required for Sun Fire and Netra systems?

A. Refer to the following compatibility matrix:

ALOM Hardware Operating min OBP     Required

NOTE: ALOM 1.6.x is the most recent and up-to-date version of this product. It has the latest platform support, support for updated system controller hardware and the latest bug fixes. It is the only release that supports all shipping hardware today. All prior versions should not be used on new shipping hardware and are no longer available on the Sun Download Center.

NOTE: The OBP versions shown in the above matrix are just the minimum supported firmware versions. It is always recommended to upgrade to the latest FW versions, that can be found on MOS.

NOTE: ALOM 1.6.x firmware have different download images. There is a download image for SunFire V215, V245, V445 and there is another image for the rest of the servers (see the second question above).

NOTE: The speed bumped 1.34GHz and 1.5GHz Sun Fire v210 and Sun Fire v240 systems require a minimum of Solaris 8 HW 02/04, Solaris 9 09/04, or Solaris 10.

NOTE: Netra 440 and Sun Fire V440 servers with Motherboard part number 501-6910 (or replacement FRU 540-6336) requires ALOM release 1.5. or later. Reference <Document 1003595.1> for possible issues.

WARNING: In the Sun Fire V440, Sun Fire V250 and Netra 440 servers that use an ALOM System Controller Card, daughter cards marked with part number 501-6346-06 (or higher, not -01 through -05) absolutely require ALOM release 1.4 or later. Using an ALOM version below 1.4 could damage the new ALOM System Controller Card.

Q. Does ALOM software come pre-installed?

A. Yes. ALOM software comes pre-installed on your host server. Therefore, ALOM works as soon as you install and power on the server. You can connect an external ASCII terminal to the serial management port (SERIAL MGT) and start using ALOM right away without needing to configure the ALOM software. For more information about connecting an external terminal, refer to the Installation Guide that came with your host server.

Q. What is the speed of the ALOM network management port?

A. The ALOM network management port is a 10BASE-T (10 Megabit per second Twisted Pair Ethernet) port that operates in half-duplex mode only. It does not support 100Mb/s or faster hubs or switches, and does not support 10Base-T full-duplex mode. The IP address assigned to it is a unique IP address, separate from the main Sun Fire server IP address, and is dedicated for use only with the ALOM system controller. It can be configured either for DHCP or a static IP address. Configuration of the NET MGT port is covered in <Document 1004884.1>

Q. What troubleshooting information is useful to gather from ALOM?

A. An alomextended script was added to Explorer v5.1 or later to gather useful information from the ALOM card when troubleshooting system or ALOM problems. See <Document 1006640.1> for full details.

See also the ALOM commands cross-reference contained in ALOM User's Guide, or <Document 1006084.1> for command options that may be useful.
