Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1002130.1 : Sun StorEdge[TM] 33x0/351x: How to reset "disk Reserved space" on a disk drive
PreviouslyPublishedAs 203031 Description This article addresses how to reset "disk Reserved space" (private region) on a SCSI/FC/SATA disk in a Sun StorEdge[TM] 33xx0/351x array. Symptoms:
Purpose/Scope: WARNING, this is a destructive process, DATA WILL BE LOST. You should backup critical data prior to implementing this procedure. This will restore the drive to initial "NEW DRV" status. This process can be utilized as a last resort troubleshooting technique where you suspect private region corruption. It can also be used in situations that require a complete array rebuild (re-deployment). In this case (array rebuild), you may also want to review: <Document: 1003584.1> Sun StorEdge[TM] 3000 Series Arrays: How to Reset the Minnow to Factory Default Settings or Saved Settings to the Disks. <Document: 1012254.1> Sun StorEdge[TM] 3000: Saving and Restoring NVRAM and Logical Drive Configuration WARNING, this is a destructive process, DATA WILL BE LOST. You should backup critical data prior to implementing this procedure. Steps to Follow All target disk(s) drives you wish to reset, must be reconfigured/removed from logical drive (LD) participation. Therefore, if any of the target disk(s) belong to an LD you must unmap the LD or LD/partitions, delete the LD (data on LD will be lost), and then delete the reserved space. All steps in the following procedure MUST be followed. WARNING: It is highly recommended that a FULL backup of the LD or LD's be taken prior to implementing this procedure. Example: To Reset reserved space for all disk(s) associated with LD0, config is a follows: sccli> show logical sccli> show partitions sccli> show map sccli> show disk - Unmap ch0/tgt40/lun0 and ch4/tgt44/lun0 via sccli or array cli sccli> unmap partition 0.40.0 - Delete logical drive (LD) via sccli or array cli sccli> delete logical-drive ld0 - Verify disk are now available/unused, LD column reports NONE sccli> show disk - From array cli main menu, select "view and edit scsi Drives" ---> select target disk "ID 0" ---> select "disk Reserved space - 256 mb" ---> select "yes" when prompted to "Remove Disk Reserved Space ?". Repeat this step for each drive originally associated with ld0, target id's 0, 1, 2. - Verify disk(s) now report "Status" of "NEW" (sccli) or "NEW DRV" (array cli) sccli> show disk - The drives are now ready to be configured into an LD Product Sun StorageTek 3510 FC Array Sun StorageTek 3310 SCSI Array Sun StorageTek 3511 SATA Array Sun StorageTek 3510 2U FC Array Sun StorageTek 3320 SCSI Array Internal Comments This document contains normalized content and is managed by the the Domain Lead(s) of the respective domains. The only known reason to utilize this process is to recover from private region corruption, which can be difficult to diagnose and is considered very rare. Because of the destructive nature of this process, great care is advised to ensure, 1.) you understand the process and 2.) ensure data integrity is maintained (if required).
