Description
Windows 2000 and newer versions offer the option to disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. This significantly changes the way that CIFS clients communicate, and can cause compatibility issues for the NAS. The NAS operating system introduced support for this environment beginning with OS version 4.21M1. Prior versions cannot be used in this environment.


Steps to Follow

This setting is enabled or disabled for each client or server. However, in a managed IT infrastructure, all Windows systems will likely use the same setting. It is important to know how this setting is configured in order to configure the NAS. The one instance where it is common

This setting significantly affects how CIFS networking takes place. The standard NetBIOS ports 135-139 are no longer used, instead, communication primarily takes place over port 445, DNS is used instead of WINS, etc..

If the customer that you are working with is not certain whether this setting is in effect, the linked article can be used to make that determination. If this is the case, you should check several systems, including key servers.

If NetBIOS over TCP/IP has in fact been disabled, NAS OS version 4.21M1 or newer is required to operate in this environment.

In order to use this functionality, Active Directory and Dynamic DNS must be enabled and correctly configured, as NetBIOS name resolution will do longer function. Also it is very important to ensure that check above has been done to ensure that the clients and servers on the network truly have NetBIOS disabled. After this configuration change has been made, requests to connect via NetBIOS will be ignored.

To configure the NAS to communicate without NetBIOS using SMB directly over TCP/IP, perform the following steps:

  1. Access the command line administration interface on the NAS via telnet, ssh or a direct console connection.

  2. Enter the following commands at the CLI

    • load smbtools

    • smbconfig netbios mode=disabled

    • set smbrdr.port 445

    • savevars
