GCS>Sun Microsystems>Storage - Disk>Modular Disk - 6xxx Arrays
 

Content will be limited to a basic usage using the CLI or BUI interfaces
for creating vdisks, and provide help with some usage failure scenarios
for this activity. Consider reviewing some of the following documents if you
are looking to perform actions beyond the scope of this document:

A. Start By Planning

Vdisk layout planning and considerations should be reviewed by
answering the following questions:

1. Have you identified an array to create this vdisk from?
2. Have you identified a pool to add this vdisk to?
3. Will you be creating a new Pool?
4. Will you be creating a new profile for a new pool
5. Will you be creating the vdisk from External Storage?

After answering these questions please review the contents of the 6920 Best Practices Guide, and identify that you are prepared with at least:

• The pool that the vdisk will reside
• The array that the vdisk will be created from

If all the information above is provided, continue to Step B.

B. Basic Usage Using Browser or SSCS interfaces

We consider basic VDisk creation the same as adding capacity to a Storage Pool. This requires that you have completed the creation of a Storage Pool, prior to attempting the following. Reference document <Document: 1004344.1> Validating Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920 Pool Creation.

SSCS

Virtual Disk Creation usage for sscs, can be reviewed in the SSCS Quick Reference Guide. The sscs usage for basic vdisk creation is as follows.

create -p|--pool <string> [-t|--tray <string>] -a|--array <string> [-d|--disk <integer>] vdisk

An example:

sscs create -p testpool -t 1 -a array00 -d 5 vdisk

This will create a VDisk in the storage pool testpool, on the array array00, using 5 drives on tray 1. The RAID configuration will be adopted
from the associated Storage Profile. Reference documents <Document: 1007144.1> Validating Pool State and Details on a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920 and <Document: 1007159.1>  Validating Profile State and Status on a StorEdge 6920 (TM).

NOTE 1: You must specify each of: a pool, a tray, an array, and the number of drives

NOTE 2: The Storage Domain is assumed to be DEFAULT when it is not specified by the -S switch in the usage

BUI

Basic VDisk creation for the BUI interface of the 6920 is completed as follows:

1. Click on the Configuration Services or Common Array Manager Link.
2. Click on the Pools Tab or Pool Menu Tree
3. Select the pool name in blue in the Storage Pool Summary screen.
4. Click the Add Storage to Pool button in the Storage Pool Details screen.
   This will open a pop-up window. You will need to have pop-ups enabled to complete this task. If a new window does NOT appear or if an error message appears on the main page, go to Step C.
5. Select the radio button next to Manual - specify by location and choose the number of disks from the pull down menu in the Configuration Method screen.
6. Click Next.
7. Select an array radio button, and click Next, in the Select Physical Location screen.
8. The Summary screen will show the number of disks, configuration type, locations, and Total storage added to pool.
9. Click the Finish button.

At this point the Pop-Up window will disappear, and the main browser screen will refresh. A job will be created. You will need to monitor the job to know if the vdisk creation was successful. To monitor jobs follow these steps:

1. Click the Jobs Running link on the top right hand corner of the Configuration Services/Common Array Manager main page.
2. In the Current Job Summary you will see the Creating virtual disks job. If the job isn't present in the Job Summary page, select Historical Jobs tab and search for the job.

• If the job received a Complete (>0 errors) or Error notification, click the Job ID to get details on the failure and continue to Step C.
• If the job received a Complete (0 errors), you have validated that volume creation is complete.

C. Creation Failure.

Please review the following list for a failure message and corresponding action. Please follow the action that describes your symptom.

BUI

Message:
An error occurred. Please contact your system administrator

Action:
Please go to Step D.

SSCS

Message:
<pool_name>: The resource was not found.

Action:
Make sure the pool exists and the name is correct(sscs list pool)

Message:
<pool_name>, couldn't find space

Action:
Make sure that there are enough available drives to make your vdisk, and the RAID level supports the number of drives specified. Remember that a RAID 1 requires at least 2 drives, and a RAID 5 requires at least 3. Reference document ### Validating Profile State and Details on a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920.

Message:
<domain>: The resource was not found.

Action:
Check the spelling of the domain name, and make sure it exists(sscs list sdomain)

Message:
Error: The operation failed.

Action:
Please go to Step D

If a message is not listed, or an action above did not work, go to Step D.

D. Data Collection

Please collect the following information:

• Answers to Questions in Step A.
• 6920 Solution Extract
• The message given by SSCS or BUI(screen capture if possible)
• The command used, if by SSCS
• The input and selections for the new volume wizard in the BUI
• The following sscs output:

sscs list sdomain
sscs list pool
sscs list pool <pool name> (pool you were adding vdisk to)
sscs list vdisk

NOTE 3: Screen captures of the summary page for each object could be used, as well, for BUI related creations.

E. Validate that services are running properly on the SP

F. Perform health check of array

Provide the following:

• Description of what is not being displayed properly
