The purpose of this document is to provide basic steps for volume
deletion for the 6920 array, via the Browser User Interface(BUI) or
sscs Command Line Interface(CLI).

Content will be limited to a basic usage using the CLI or BUI interfaces
for deleting volumes, and provide help with some usage failure scenarios
for this activity. Consider reviewing some of the following documents if you
are looking to perform actions beyond the scope of this document:

A. Validate if the Volume is Mapped

Make sure that the volume details via SSCS shows nothing in Associations field, or the State field in the BUI shows Free. Reference <Document: 1009974.1> Validating Volume State and Details on a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920

• If the volume is mapped, you must delete the mapping before deleting the volume. Reference <Document: 1005606.1> : Validating Mapping Deletion for Volumes and Initiators for a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6290
• If the volume is not mapped, continue to Step B.

B. Validate if the Volume is a Snapshot Parent

Make sure that the volume details via SSCS shows nothing in the Snapshots field, or that BUI shows the number of snapshots in Additional Information equals zero(0). Reference <Document: 1009974.1>  Validating Volume State and Details on a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920

• If the volume is a snapshot parent, you must delete the snapshot first. Reference <Document: 1007160.1> : Validating Snapshot and Snapshot Reserve Deletion for a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920
• If the volume is not a snapshot parent, continue to Step C.

C. Validate if a Mirror Component is a snapshot parent

Make sure that the volume details for each component of the main mirror device via SSCS shows nothing in the Snapshots field, or that BUI shows the number of snapshots in Additional Information equals zero(0). • If component has a snapshot, you must delete the snapshot. Reference <Document: 1007160.1> : Validating Snapshot and Snapshot Reserve Deletion for a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920
• If the volume is not a mirror device, continue to Step D.

D. Validate if the Volume is part of a Replication Set

Make sure that the volume summary via SSCS does not show the type as Replicated, or that BUI shows the number of replication sets in Additional Information equals zero(0). Reference <Document: 1009974.1> Validating Volume State and Details on a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920

• If the volume is part of a replication set, you must delete the set, before the volume can be deleted. Reference < Solution: 213512 > Validating Replication Set Deletion for a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920
• If the volume is not part of a replication set, continue to Step E.

E. Basic Usage Using Browser or SSCS interfaces

SSCS

Volume deletion usage for sscs, can be reviewed in the Sun StorEdge 6920 System CLI Quick Reference Guide, Release 3.0. The sscs usage for basic volume deletion is as follows.

sscs delete [-S|--sdomain <string>] volume <volume-name>

An example:

sscs delete volume 100GBvol

This will delete the volume is called 100GBvol.

NOTE1: The Storage Domain is assumed to be DEFAULT when it is not specified by the -S switch in the usage

BUI

Volume Deletion steps for the BUI can be reviewed in Sun StorEdge 6920 System Administration Guide For the Browser Interface Management Software, Release 3.0 for help with other object creation activities. Volume deletion for the BUI interface of the 6920 is completed as follows:

1. Click on the Configuration Services or Common Array Manager(3.2.0.38) Link.
2. Click on the Volume Tab or Volume Menu Tree
3. Click on the Volume Name for the Volume Details Page
4. Click on the Delete Button
5. Click OK to confirm the deletion

At this point the Pop-Up window will disappear, and the main browser screen will refresh, and a success or failure message will be displayed in the Volume Summary page. The volume will no longer be listed.

• If you received a failure notification, continue to Step F.
• If you received a success notification, you have validated that volume deletion is complete.

F. Deletion Failure.

Please review the following table for a failure message and corresponding action. Please follow the action that describes your symptom.

Message:
An error occurred. Please contact your system administrator

Action:
Please go to Step G.

Message:
<vol_name> - You cannot delete a volume that is mapped to one or more initiators.

Action:
See Step A in this document.

Message:
<vol_name> - Cannot delete a Mirror with active Snapshots

Action:
See Step C in this document.

Message:
<vol_name> - The volume specified has one or more snapshots.

Action:
See Step B in this document.

SSCS
Message:
Error: The operation failed.

Action:
Please go to Step G.

Message:
The volume specified has one or more snapshots.

Action:
See Step B in this document.

Message:
Cannot delete a Mirror with active Snapshots

Action:
See Step C in this document.

Message:
You cannot delete a volume that is mapped to one or more initiators.

Action:
See Step A in this document.

Message:
<vol_name>: not found

Action:
Check the storage domain specified, and make sure it matches the one for the volume. See Step E.

If a message is not listed, or an action above did not work, go to Step G.

G. Data Collection

Please collect the following information:

• 6920 Solution Extract, Reference <Document: 1003756.1> : How to collect an extractor from a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920 (2.x and 3.x)
• The message given by SSCS or BUI(screen capture if possible)
• The command used, if by SSCS
• The input and selections for the new volume wizard in the BUI
• The following sscs output:

sscs list sdomain
sscs list volume
sscs list volume <vol name>
sscs list pool
sscs list pool <pool name> (needed for sizing issues)
sscs list vdisk
sscs list repset

NOTE 2: Screen captures of the summary page for each object could be used, as well, for BUI related creations.
