Description
Validating Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920 Snapshot Modification

The purpose of this document is to provide basic steps for snapshot
modification for the 6920 array, via the Browser User Interface(BUI) or
sscs Command Line Interface(CLI).

Content will be limited to a basic usage using the CLI or BUI interfaces
for modifying snapshots, and provide help with some usage failure scenarios
for this activity. Consider reviewing some of the following documents if you
are looking to perform actions beyond the scope of this document:

Steps to Follow
Basic Usage of Browser or SSCS Interfaces

A. Start By Planning

Volume layout planning and considerations should be reviewed by
answering the following questions before modifying your volume:

  1. Will you be changing the Volume/Snapshot policy?
  2. Will you be renaming your snapshot?
  3. Will you be changing the snapshot description?
  4. Will you be changing the snapshot count?
  5. Will you be changing the snapshot level?
  6. Will you be resnapping?
  7. Will you be performing a snapshot rollback?

After answering these questions please review the contents of the Best Practices for the Sun StorEdge 6920 System, Version 3.0.1, and identify that you are prepared with at least:

  • The policy to favor
  • The new name of the snapshot
  • The new description of the snapshot
  • The new snapshot count
  • The new snapshot level
  • The snapshot to rollback

If all the information above is provided, continue to Step B

B. Basic Usage of Browser or SSCS Interfaces

SSCS

Snapshot volume modification usage for sscs, can be reviewed in the Sun StorEdge 6920 System CLI Quick Reference Guide, Release 3.0. The sscs usage for basic snapshot volume modifications are as follows.

  • This CLI will change the favor policy for the volume:
    modify -f <volume/snapshot> volume <volume name>
    EX:
sscs modify -f snapshot volume snaptest
Note: The favor policy will change to favor the snapshot
  • This CLI will change the snapshot volume name and description:
    modify [-N|--new-name <string>] [-d|--description <string>] volume <string>
    EX:
    sscs modify -N new_volume_name -d "changed description" volume old_volume_name
Note: This will change the volume name from "old_volume_name" to "new_volume_name". The description of the volume will change to "changed description"
  • This CLI will change the snapshot count and snapshot level:
    modify -C 1..32 -L high volume snaptest
    EX:
sscs modify -C 4 -L high volume snaptest
Note: The snapshot count will be changed to 4 and the snapshot level will be changed to high. The snapshot count and level options need to be specified when changing either variable.
  • This CLI will resnap a volume
    snapshot -R|--resnap volume <snapshot volume>
    EX:
    sscs snapshot -R volume snap_cli
Note: A resnap of snashot volume "snap_cli" will occur. The data on the snapshot will be updated with the current data of the parent volume. Any data on the snapshot volume will be overwritten
  • This CLI will rollback the snapshot:
    snapshot -b|--rollback volume <string>
    EX:
    sscs snapshot -b volume snap_cli
Note: A rollback of the snapshot volume snap_cli will be started. A rollback will copy the data from the snapshot to the parent volume. Any data on the parrent volume will be overwritten.
  • This CLI will cancel a rollback of a snapshot:
    snapshot -c|--cancel-rollback volume <string>
    EX:
    sscs snapshot -c volume snap_cli
Note: The rollback of the snapshot volume snap_cli will be canceled. Warning: This operation should only be used as a last resort because it causes the parent volume to be lost.

NOTE1: The Storage Domain is assumed to be DEFAULT when it is not specified by the -S switch in the usage

BUI

Snapshot modification for the BUI interface of the 6920 is completed as follows:

C. Creation Failure.

Please review the following table for a failure message and corresponding action. Please follow the action that describes your symptom.

BUI
Message:
An error occurred. Please contact your system administrator

Action:
Please go to Step D

Message:
The Snapshot name contains invalid characters

Action:
Change the Snapshot name per pop-up directions.

SSCS
Message:
Name contains illegal characters

Action:
Change the snapshot Name. Valid Characters are A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -, or _. No Spaces

Check the current settings for the reserve size (sscs list volume <snapshot name>) and verify that the size isn't being decreased in the command

Message:
The snapshot level and count entered would not result in equal or larger snapshot reserve.

Action:
You can't decrease the snapshot count or the snap level. A snap reserve needs to be deleted and rebuilt to decrease the size, check document <Document: 1007160.1>  Validating Snapshot and Snapshot Reserve Deletion for a Sun StorEdge[TM] 6920 for details|

If a message is not listed, or an action above did not work, go to Step G.
