Description

While looking at the Diagnostic report of NAS (Sun StorageTek[TM] 5xx0 NAS Appliances) we only get the Volume name and the LUN information on which the Volume was created. There is no information in the Diagnostic mail which would provide the information on how many Segment (also called Extents) are attached to the Volume as shown below.

 - Volume : /vol1 (isp2d020,1)
Total Capacity : 20113 MB

This document would talk about the procedure which can be used to find the different Segments (Extents) attached to the a particular Volume.

Steps to Follow

Login into the NAS by telnet (or other services) to access the command line.

The first option is look at the bootlogs/syslogs to see how many Segments (Extents) were attached to the volume while booting.

1. Look at the bootlog (or syslog) for the following output

  04/16/07 19:18:09 I sfs2: /vol1 - id=65D22A33, extent 1 of 3, version 2
04/16/07 19:18:09 I sfs2: /vol1 - id=65D22A33, extent 2 of 3, version 2
04/16/07 19:18:09 I sfs2: /vol1 - id=65D22A33, extent 3 of 3, version 2

The above output provide the details on number of extent attached to the volume while bringing the volume online. In normal scenario we should be able to see the extent # of # being attached to the volume.

2. The next step is to know which different LUNs have these Segments from

  a. From the command line run "disk" to see the LUN available on the NAS.
  SE5310 > disk
ide1d1 250367KB
isp2d020 1950909439KB
isp2d021 1950909439KB
  b. Now select the disk name (ispXd
  SE5310 > disk isp2d020

3 20971760 -414120177 free 1894944MB

The above output provide the details on the partitions (Volume/Segements) created on the LUN Entry "1" shows that a partition exists which is part of vol1. Here vol1 is in "()" because vol1 is currently unmounted. Entry "2" indicate a partition which is unattached segment

Comment: Hi Sushil

"id=65D22A33" are logged in the logs, while with dump command it wont be possible to map the extent. The logs always display the id of the first segment of the volume. Hence I have not used the same command in this document.

Please let me know your comments on this.

Kind Regards

Comment: Hi Krishan,
Can you include the command that Kuswandi mentioned:
There is a command to display the extents, use disk command with dump option.
The extent id numbers appear in the log.
