Description
To ensure an optimum operation of the Sun StorageTek[TM] 5310/5210/5220/5320 NAS Appliance, it is important to have a good healthy power supply at all times.

This document provides detailed information on ascertaining the health of the power supplies.



Steps to Follow
Perform some basic checks when dealing with power issues.
  • Is the power cord properly inserted and fully seated?
  • Is the system power cord properly connected to the system and plugged into a NEMA 5-15R outlet for 100/120 V or a NEMA 6-15R outlet for 200/240V?
  • Is AC power available at the wall outlet verified to be reliable?

For details on specific NAS appliances:

StorageTek[TM] 5320 NAS Appliance

Check the Power Ok LED and Power supply/rear fan tray fault LED on the front panel.

The Power OK LED has 3 states:

  • Off - Server main power and standby power are off
  • Blinking - Server is in Standby mode with AC power supplied to only the GRASP board and the power supply fans
  • On - Server is in main power mode with AC supply to all components

The Power Supply/Rear Fan tray fault LED lights when:

  • Two power supplies are present but only one has AC power connected.
  • Any voltage related event occurs in the system
  • For CPU related voltage errors, the associated CPU fault LED will also light up.

For StorageTek 5320 NAS Appliance only, when the rear fan tray has failed or is removed:

  • On the CSM2 module, check the power status LED
  • Steady green indicates that power is applied to the tray and the tray is functioning properly
  • Off means no power is applied
  • Flash means normal activity is in progress

Check the LEDs on the power supplies at the rear of the CSM1 or CSM2 module.

Under normal operating conditions, with an ambient air temperature range of 5 to 40 degrees C (40 to 104 degrees F), the fans in the module maintain a proper operating temperature inside the module. If the internal temperature exceeds 70 degrees C (158 degrees F), the power supplies shut down automatically. If both power supplies shut down because of overheating, the module has no power and all indicator lights are off.

The following factors can cause the power supplies to overheat:

  • Unusually high room temperature
  • Fan failures
  • Defective circuitry in the power supply
  • Blocked air vent
  • Failure in another device in the RAID array module cabinet
  • If a fan failure has caused the overheating, the fan Fault lights and the power supply Fault lights turn on.
  • If the module temperature exceeds 45 degrees C (113 degrees F)

If the indicator LEDs are off, then stop I/O activity to the module and all attached modules.

1. To alleviate the overheating problem, perform any or all of the following cooling measures:

a. Using external fans to cool the area.
b. Shut down the power to the modules.

2. Wait for the air temperature in and around the module to cool.

After the temperature inside the power supplies cools to below 70 degrees C (158 degrees F), the module is capable of a power-up recovery without operator intervention. After the air has cooLED, the power supplies should turn on automatically. If the power supplies restart automatically, the controllers reset and return to normal operation.

3. Turn on both power switches on the back of each drive module. Wait 60 seconds before proceeding to step 4.
The drive modules do not spin up until they receive a Start Unit command from the controller. While the drive modules power up, the lights on the fronts and backs of the modules flash intermittently. Depending on your configuration, it can take between 20 seconds and several minutes for the drive modules to power up.

4. Turn on both power switches on the back of the RAID array module.
A RAID array module can take 30 seconds to power up and up to 15 minutes for the battery self-test to complete. During this time, the lights on the front and the back of the modules flash intermittently.

5. Check the status of each module and its components. Note the status of the indicator lights on the front and the back of each module. A green light indicates a normal status; an amber light indicates a hardware fault.

6. Does each module display green lights only?

  • Yes - Complete
  • No - Go to Step 7

7. Diagnose and correct the fault.

a. Run the raidctl command to get the RAID controller profile.
b. Replace any faiLED component. Use the individual lights on the modules to locate the specific faiLED component.

8 . If problem persists, then collect diagnostic email and nas extractor and contact Sun Support.

StorageTek[TM] 5220 NAS Appliance

This NAS appliance has a CSM2 tray. Follow the instructions for the CSM2 tray given above.
The expansion unit also have redundant power supplies and the same convention that has been followed so far is to be followed for determining the health of the power supplies.

StorageTek[TM] 5310/5210 NAS Appliance

Front panel LED

Power LED Green - This LED is controlled by software. It turns steady when the server is powered up and is off when the system is off or in sleep mode.

Power/Sleep Pushbutton - This pushbutton is used to toggle the system power on and off. This button is also used as a sleep button for operating systems that follow the ACPI specification. Linux, for example, configures the power button to the instant off mode. There is no ACPI support for the Solaris[TM] Operating System.

Rear panel LED

Power Supply Green/Amber - This is a bi-color LED that can be on, off, green, amber, or blinking, or combination thereof.

OFF No AC power present to power supply
BLINKING GREEN AC power present, but only the standby outputs are on
GREEN Power supply DC outputs are on and OK
BLINKING AMBER PSAlert# signal asserted, power supply on
AMBER Power supply shutdown due to over current, over temperature, over voltage, or undervoltage
AMBER or OFF Power supply faiLED and AC fuse open or other critical failure

If redundant power supplies are used in the StorageTek 5310/5210 NAS Appliance, the power supply LEDs have the following meaning:

Both LEDs off No power to power supplies or both power supplies bad.
Both LEDs blinking green Power supplies receiving AC power, but server is off.
Both LEDs solid green Server is fully powered on and power supplies are good.
One LED solid green and one LED amber AC power missing from one of the power supplies.

Note: If the system is operating normally and the Power LED is off, then the LED is defective.
