Description
This document covers ensuring NIC roles are correct, modifying them if needed, and the behavior of a NAS server connected to multiple IP subnets. This issue applies only to Windows networking. Please note that this issue would affect any similarly configured system, NAS or otherwise.

Steps to Follow
Multiple Subnets Connected
Care must be taken when the Sun StorageTek[TM] NAS 5000 Series is connected to multiple subnets, particularly when the subnets are disjointed, i.e., not connected to one another. A common example of this is a direct connection to a backup or database server.

The problem created by the disjointed subnets is that the Sun StorageTek NAS 5000 Series registers each of its IP addresses through NetBIOS broadcast or WINS or both. The domain controller might select one of the addresses on a disjoint subnet, and fail to communicate with the Sun StorageTek[TM] 53x0, resulting in a failure to join the domain. The solution to this is to prevent NetBIOS registration of those addresses not connected to the main network.

To Configure the NIC Role:

In the case of the backup or database server, the solution is easy. The Sun
StorageTek NAS independent NIC role was created expressly for this
purpose. Configure this as follows:

Connect to the Sun StorageTek NAS through Telnet or a serial console.
Press enter at the [menu] prompt and type the administrator password.
Select option A, Host Name & Network.
Select option 1, Edit fields.
Navigate through the fields using the Tab or Enter key until the Role field of the desired NIC is highlighted. It may be necessary to use the space bar to page the display to the desired NIC.
Select option 3, Independent.
Select option 7, Save Changes.

To Disable NetBIOS Registration Without Changing the NIC Role:

This procedure can be done if you have a problem after attempting the previous
solution, or if you have a requirement to leave the role as primary.

Connect to the Sun StorageTek NAS through Telnet or a serial console.
Type "admin" at the [menu] prompt and type the administrator password.
At the CLI, enter "load smbtools" and then enter "smbwins exclude
addr=x.x.x.x".

This action prevents the private IP addresses from being registered through NetBIOS. However, the master browsers and WINS servers do not immediately remove these addresses. To accomplish this, continue with the following steps:

Using WINS Manager, remove the entry for the Sun StorageTek NAS from
any WINS server databases.
Locate the WINS server, the master browser for the local subnet and any local
domain controllers. (If the master browsers cannot be located, this will still work, but may take as long as an hour to completely disappear from all browse lists.)
Enter "nbtstat -R" at the Windows CLI on each of these systems.
Reboot the Sun StorageTek NAS.

Note - The above changes do not take effect until after the reboot.
This action removes the undesired entries in almost every case. The only case where the entries might persist is in a multiple server WINS environment using replication. In this case, consult the provider of the WINS server operating system for removal instructions.
