Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1010645.1 : Serial devices requiring RS-232 may cause a hang if the serial ports are not configured accordingly
PreviouslyPublishedAs 214677 Description To configure the serial ports for RS-232, some older Sun[TM] workstations and desktops need jumpers to be set on the system board. Many Sun CPU serial ports can be configured as either RS-232 (+/- 12V) or RS-423 (+/- 5V), defaults vary. See the hardware documentation for your machine to locate the jumper to configure this, if it exists. Most implementations do not have to worry about the voltage on the serial port. Steps to Follow To configure the serial ports for RS-232, some older Sun workstations and desktops need jumpers to be set on the system board, while newer systems can be configured without jumper settings from the OpenBoot[TM] PROM (OBP). See system specific details in the following matrix: System Jumper Name RS-232 setting default jumper setting Ultra 5/10 JP3, JP4 1-2 IN 2-3 IN (RS-423) Ultra 30 J2604, J2605 1-2 IN 2-3 IN (RS-423) Ultra 60 J2604, J2605 1-2 IN 2-3 IN (RS-423) Ultra 80 J2804, J2805 1-2 IN 2-3 IN (RS-423) Sunblade 150* - from OBP - Sunblade 1000* - from OBP - Sunblade 2000* - from OBP - * No jumper settings are required. To configure the serial ports for RS-232, bring the system to the OBP and do: ok setenv ttya-mode 9600,8,n,1,-,rs232 ok setenv ttyb-mode 9600,8,n,1,-,rs232 ok reset-all Please contact the manufacturer of the device for details on compatibility and special requirements on the serial port.
