This document provides the steps to determine the correct settings for speed and duplex, and to verify and/or set these using the NAS admin command line interface (CLI). It covers auto-negotiation and forced NIC speeds, and when each should be used. Steps to Follow By default, the Sun StorageTek[TM] 5000 Series NAS Ethernet driver is set to auto-negotiate speed and duplex. This is the recommended configuration and best practice. Sometimes, due to particular customer requirements or a compatibility problem with a switch, it is necessary to force the speed and duplex settings. The CLI em command provides the capability to view and set NIC speed and duplex. In order for network communication to function, both the switch port and the interface on the NAS must be set to the same speed and duplex. If the duplex and speed do not match, you will see very slow performance and network errors, or even an inability to establish a link. WARNING: If speed and duplex are forced on either the network switch or the NAS, they must also be forced on the other side. Under no circumstances should only one side be set to auto-negotiate. If this is done, the negotiation will fail and the settings will be mismatched. The following commands are used to check or force speed and duplex for the NAS Ethernet driver. The commands are available only at the CLI. To view the current negotiated rate, enter: em show all The name of each NIC and current speed, duplex, and link status is displayed. Example: em show all emc1: 1000Mb/s FULL-DUPLEX, Link is UP emc2: 1000Mb/s FULL-DUPLEX, Link is UP emf3: Link is DOWN To force a particular rate (and disable auto-negotiation), enter: em set NICname duplex=[full|half] speed=[10|100|1000] NICname will be as reported in the first column of the em show output, both speed and duplex are mandatory. Be sure to force the same settings on the switch. Example: em set emc1 speed=100 duplex=full emc1: 100Mb/s FULL-DUPLEX, Link is UP In order to re-initialize auto-negotiation, it is necessary to reboot the NAS. Note: The "emf" or fiber gigabit NIC always operates at 1000Mb/s full-duplex mode. 1000Mb/s half-duplex is not a valid setting for any supported network adapters.
