Description
Sun StorEdge[TM] SE9910/60 Battery Replacement: What happens if Sun StorEdge 9900 Microcode is below 01-19-44-00/00?

Steps to Follow
Sun StorEdge 9910/Sun StorEdge 9960 Microcode informational notes:
------------------------------------------
(a) Microcode 01-19-44-00/00 - incorporate new SVP Battery Replacement steps
for Basic Cache Battery
Microcode 01-19-51-00/00 - incorporate new SVP Battery Replacement steps
for Optional Cache Battery
(b) Why the new Battery Replacement Steps for Basic as well as Optional cache
Battery (deemed not necessary now)?
Possible scenario:
The backup switching circuit on the CACHE board had a noise caused by the
incoming current to the Battery. This noise may cause to fail the backup
switching circuit on the CACHE board then may block one side of CACHE or
SM (refer to HDS Alert# "9960#136F 9910#136F").
(c) Why BATCTR SH200 needed to be A/G or higher?
Because SH200-A/E may stop charging by using new replacement procedure
(refer to ECN DKC410-H046).
What implications if the Sun StorEdge 9900 Microcode is below 01-19-44-00/00?
------------------------------------------------------------------
If your customer has Sun StorEdge 9900 that happens to have microcode version below 01-19-44-00/00 and Battery Packs are giving SIM warning messages of "OVER LIFE SPAN OF BATTERY" and Battery Replacements need to be scheduled, hopefully this compiled Notes could alleviate your confusion with regards to Battery Replacements in Sun StorEedge 9900 with older Microcode versions.
You are wondering how ECN DKC410-H046 & FCB DKC410I-H018 (Issue: Basic Battery replacement may cause one side of Cache or Shared Memory to blockade) would have affected your Battery Replacement procedures. On top of that, a follow-up HDS Alert "9960#136F & 9910#110F" (referencing to ECN DKC410-H046 and ECN DKC410-H051) indicates the Cache/Shared Memory blockage symptom could also happen during Optional Battery Replacements as well.
In Microcodes 01-19-44-00/00 and 01-19-51-00/00, the Battery Replacement procedures in Maintenance Section at SVP Console guide you through the "replace/reseat the BATCTR" steps during the Battery Replacements. For SE9900 Microcode version prior to 01-19-44-00/00 and/or 01-19-51-00/00, how do we perform the "replace/reseat the BATCTR" steps without these procedural dialogue steps incorporate into its Maintenance Section of SVP Console? Or is the 'old' Maintenance procedure (just swapping the battery) the recommended way to replace the batteries on versions prior to 01-19-44-00/00 (even though it does work most of the time)?
Steps for Battery Replacements for Sun StorEdge 9900 Micrcode version below 01-19-44-00/00:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Below are some additional tips from Sun StorEdge 9900 practitioner sources with respect to replacing Battery Units for sites having Sun StorEdge 9900 Microcode version that is below 01-19-44-00/00:
(A) Recommended Method -
The recommended steps would be to update the microcode level to latest HDS Supported Microcode version level (GA/RGA/MGA versions or at least MGA version level) prior to the Battery Replacements. Ucode 01-19-44-00/00 & higher incorporates new SVP Battery Replacement steps for Basic/Optional Cache Batteries.
(B) Case of older Sun StorEdge 9900 Microcode of version below 01-19-44-00/00 -
In the event that Microcode could not be upgraded soonest and the Battery units must be replaced (dying soon scenario), field could follow the steps in ECN referenced DKC410-H046 -ie. Dummy replace the BATCTR and replace the Battery during this, and resetting the SVP Battery ages afterward (note: also re-label the specific Battery Box sticker). The Optional Cache Battery units do not need the dummy replacement of the BATCTR. Follow the instructions in the ECN (not the 12.5 MM). Rev 12.5 of the Maintenance Manuals incorrectly includes this step for the optional batteries. Rev 12.6 MM (or higher) has been fixed to reflect the correct procedure that is also in the ECN.
The Cache should not be affected if the ECN is followed, but if it does become blocked due to some unforseen reason(s) - the contingency resolution plan is to do a dummy replacement of the affected Cache Board to clear the Cache blockade (Half). However, you should look at all SIMs and the specific circumstances of the blockade before
proceeding.
Notes:
- Please refer to the Microcode ECN information for any updated
procedures or precautions.
- Please re-label the Sticker Date at the Battery Assembly or Pack
after any Battery replacement.
- Recheck the SVP Battery Life setting (9960MM - Periodic Check
section) and set to 3 years instead of default 2 years. HDS
indicated Battery life of 3 years.

Comment: Good doc that brings a lot of different iformation into one doc. there is a lot of confusion surrounding battery replacement and this doc puts information into once place.

I removed the sentences containing email addresses of 2 PTS engineers.

Comment: I am unlocking this into the general tech review queue for a second opinion since I believe that we already have this topic covered in srdb 76280. I think that if there is any clarification of what to do in that procedure below the recommended microcode for the replacement, it could be amended to that srdb rather than another doc written for it. placing into tech review for another opinion.

Comment: Hi Tech Reviewer,
Thanks for the vital pointer to include in document the points to clarify what occurs if the customer is not at the recommended microcode for this procedure - a very important pointer.

Please review again -thanks. If still not benefitial for use, I would be dropping document (alright with me).

Comment: I still believe that much of this document is covered in SRDB 76280. If you feel a comment or information needs to be added to that document to clarify what occurs if the customer is not at the recommended microcode for this procedure, please add a note to that document.

Comment: At one of our major MNC customer, the Service Partner (trained in HDS products) had hard time convincing customer to upgrade their SE9960 Boxes to latest prevailing supported HDS ucode level (RGA) - we are still trying.

In May 2004, 2 of the SE9960s had Batteries expired and because of the low ucode level the Services Partner asked SUN to provide the procedural notes on how to go about the battery change in view of the possible Cache related alert.

I emailed support alias and Charles Lufton responded. I just it would benefit SUN Engineers or Trained Partners if one of their sites also have SE9910/60 that have low ucode below 01-19-44-00/00.

If you felt it is unnecessary, then I would likely drop the KFF document.

Many Thanks & Regards.

Comment: AN SRDB exists that goes over this subject. If you want to add any notes / steps to that document (SRDB 76280) please do so. I wouldn't recommend another doc as it would seem to be a duplicate.
