Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1012873.1 : StorageTek[TM] 5000 Series NAS: Guidelines and cautions for free space and files per directory
PreviouslyPublishedAs 217662 Description Description Symptoms:
Purpose/scope: Observing guidelines for free space and the number of files per directory on the NAS can significantly enhance performance and usability. The NAS OS performs best when an ample amount of free disk space can be maintained, and also when the number of files per directory can be managed, and this document outlines these guidelines. Steps to Follow Steps to Follow For best performance, we recommend the following:
If there is a requirement to use directories with larger numbers of files, consider locating these directories somewhere other than the shared or mounted directory. This ensures that the directories are read only when necessary, reducing system load. Failure to follow these guidelines can result in poor performance or worse. In extreme cases where both of these are exceeded by a large margin, for example 100K files in a directory combined with 5% free space, it is possible to experience more severe problems, up to and including timeouts and/or extremely slow response times resembling a hang condition. Note that the above recommendations should be considered guidelines. Actual thresholds may vary depending on many other factors, such as number of active connections and system load. Also note that scheduled checkpoints will stop when a disk volume reaches 90% full, and some, but not all scheduled checkpoints will be deleted when a volume reaches 95% full.
